I don't entirely agree with your point on their special unit. I use 30 Volksgrenadiers in my German army and likely would do the same if I still played Japanese. Pound for pound they are among the hardest hitting and durable units in the game.

I highly recommend paratroopers in an army that uses 2 or more heavy tanks, as they will provide you with a steady supply of super heavy infantry to help support your tanks, clean up areas of the map your tanks won't reach in time, take out well placed AT guns, etc.

This is the most frustrating part. This game really has the potential to be a chart buster, but there is too much ineptitude in some of the business decisions being made around the game.
