This weekend is our first Black History Matters Event focusing on the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama.

At 10:22 a.m. on the morning of September 15th, 1963, in Birmingham, Alabama a bomb detonated on the east side of the 16th Street Baptist Church. There were over 200 parishioners inside the African-American church. More than 20 people were injured in the blast, and four young girls, between the ages of 11 and 14, were killed. The children were found mutilated from the blast, in the church’s basement restroom. The bombing was the latest in Birmingham’s long history of bombing African-American homes and institutions. Outrage over the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing, and the deaths of the four young girls, marked a turning point in the United States during the civil rights movement. The support generated from this tragic event contributed to both the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The attack was perpetrated by at least 3 members of the Ku Klux Klan. The FBI accumulated evidence against the bombers during an investigation that lasted until 1968. However, under orders from J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI did not disclose their evidence to county prosecutors. None of the suspects were convicted until 1977, and the last of the suspects would not be tried and imprisoned until 2002.

During this event there will be 25% off Farm, Caravan, Library and Command Post building upgrades and 33% off all upgrades to Generals (excluding General Ironside).

(Event lasts from 14:00 UTC 7/3 until 14:00 UTC 7/6.)
