Do I only get this message if you have found old hardware in the past few months?
No - I see it and I'm on recent hardware.

Wonder if this means things are going to get worse, or if they're just admitting that the game as is has problems?

I'm sure they're well aware of the issues of the game being played on older devices. I think the message also said that lags/glitches would be much more noticeable in the next update.

So if the game is already somewhat laggy on your device, it's likely going to get worse after next update.

The issue isn't the game. It's perfectly valid to expect consumers to update their hardware as games get more complicated.
People update their PCs or graphics cards to play newer games. Same difference.

Sure, but usually that's because of graphics improvements. Graphics don't really matter in this game - and haven't changed noticeably. There's no reason to abandon customers like this.

It's not like anyone's going to go out and buy a new phone for this game... <doesn't look at shiny new phone which obviously has a million other uses>

It can also be meant that they are not supporting old software anymore. Like iOS 10 or similar. Upgrading to the newer OS should be fix any problems on old devices. If your hardware is not able to upgrade to the newest OS, your hardware seems to be too old. Easy like that I guess.

It's not like a PC. On a PC I can choose to run games on low graphics. Or I can upgrade my system for a game I want to buy.
Here it's about a software that updates itself (or denies playing if I try to omit) and for basically no visibly nor explained reason has much worse performance and now even forced new hardware (* which they don't explain neither).

And in contrasts to a PC I cannot even choose to change parts of my system worth 30% of value - no, they want me to pay 100% for a new system to continue usage of 1 of 50 apps.
No matter if you payed into the game. It's more like Valve bans you from your Steam account.

Yes the game got laggy on my device since that one update and that message could hit me...

I assume they want to use underlining code libraries (e.g., a game engine) that requires certain hardware specifications. That's a blind guess. But I also assume those likely newer code libraries include other updates (not just performance) like security fixes. Again, only speculation as a possibility.

If the phone/tablet OS version is supported by the game, then BHG probably has no way to downgrade the game performance. I thought I read it somewhere that Apple doesn’t allow that to happen. If this is all about unsupported OS, then it makes sense. However, given the plethora (!) of information provided by BHG in the notice (and the silence by them here) keeps us guessing.

Having just upgraded an old iPad, there are a number of games having issues with old devices. Some games stopped after an upgrade, some started crashing and simple games and programs continued to run. The technology advances such that I expect any device over4-5 years old will likely have issues with the bigger/graphic/multiplayer games.

Happy to clear some of this up!

With the next update, we are updating our libraries as SomeRandomPlayer has suspected. These changes are necessary for us to keep certification with Apple/Google, but also accounts for security improvements as others have suggested.

We sent the popup to all players, to provide advanced notice to look out for performance issues with the next update. We also sent private messages to players operating on the oldest devices that their game may be at a greater risk. If you did not receive an inbox message (and only saw the popup) you should be fine after the next update.
