hi there Mat,

'Allied Troops' specifically refers to troops you can deploy/control. Barracks, factory, airstrip troops, generals, Troop Tactics, and donated troops all fall into the 'Allied Troop' category.

Basically, if you are deploying it, it is allied.

However, if one of those troops is turned on you by betrayal or something similar they are no longer an 'Allied Troop' and those related effects will no longer apply.
