Hey friends,

I've been enjoying vigorously following the forums since I started this game in late August. Thanks a lot to all those of you who post much appreciated valuable information :). I wrote a small FAQ for newer people in my clan (raiders united), which we have available on our line channel, and thought I'd post it here. Maybe someone can benefit. And feedback from those of you who know much more than I is naturally much appreciated :).

FAQ

Q: When should I upgrade to the next age?
A: It really depends on which strategy you follow and what you're comfortable with. Some people swear by maxing out the base in each age before upgrading, mostly to prevent from getting looted by harder opponents, and some advice to just upgrade the essentials and then move on. In general, if you're not online a lot, you're better served by maxing out your base in each age. If you're online a lot, the most effective for you will be to max out offense in each age and then move on to the next. Once you reach industrial age, you'll have plenty of time to catch up with your defense, while getting the maximum loot out of your raiding. And if you have a preference for one or the other? Do whatever. This game is about having fun ;).

Q: What should I upgrade when I reach my new age?
A: Again, this will depend on your playing style. In general, we recommend that you get your offense up as the first thing in each age. Specific for the enlightenment age is that you should upgrade your temple as the first thing, as you'll then get the training bless available to you, which will have an incredible impact on your ability to get loot.

Q: Which medal range is the best for me to stay in?
A: Whichever you're the most comfortable with. If you measure your success with the amount of medals you have, the higher the better. If you want the most loot possible, but haven't yet reached enlightenment age, you should experiment with anything between 200-1200 medals. The loot available in each range changes over time. If you've reached enlightenment age or above and have upgraded your offense, you'll get the most bang for the buck in the 2400-2600 range (going a bit above 2600 regularly to retain Empire III league rewards). Why this? The league rewards here are massive just for winning and you don't yet experience too much trouble getting opponents. You can earn up to 6 million gold per hour in this range with training blessing turned on. At ranges higher than this, you start getting problems finding available opponents, which reduces the amount of battles you can do per hour significantly. And it's just very annoying ;).

Q: Are walls important?
A: YES. Walls are the single most difficult thing to upgrade long term. If you want max walls, you'll need billions of gold. Especially in late game, walls will be incredibly important both for keeping more loot, and for when/if you decide to go for medals. Whenever you have spare gold available to you, you should put it in your walls. This is why it's always recommended to keep at least one worker not working at all times.

Q: Where should I place my town center?
A: In any other cases than going for medals, your town center should be as easily reachable as possible for your opponent. The reason behind this is that if someone takes your town center down, you'll get a peace treaty, which will mean no attacks and thus less loot lost. So the answer is that the tc should be placed outside of your walls. If you're going for medals, it might even be adviceable to keep the tc outside the walls in order to get a peace treaty as quickly as possible. Once you reach the higher medal ranges, people will just force quit the app if they're losing, so you won't get any defensive wins anyway. You'll just get "ghost attacks" which makes you lose ressources, until someone finally wins and earns you a peace treaty.

Q: How should I design my base?
A: Until you decide to go for medals, your base should be focused entirely on protecting your ressources. This means making as many compartments as possible with your walls, while protecting your mills/markets. At the same time, you need to think about having your defenses laid out in a way where anti-cavalry and anti-foot defenses suppliment each other. This could for example be by placing your ballista next to your catapult. In addition, you should think about placing your traps in a way where your opponent is very likely to hit. If you want to get really advanced, you can start thinking about tricking the artificial intelligence of the troops attacking you, so that if someone rallies on your market, for instance, the troops are forced to walk a certain way. The ai is always trying to go the way with least wall resistance. Otherwise, check out the album "Strong base designs" for inspiration. You can also think about how you remove your forests and try that way to hide certain buildings. NOTE that surrounding your entire base with one strip of walls is the absolute worst design you can have, as your opponent just needs to break down one wall to have access to everything in your base.

Q: Which troops should I upgrade first?
A: Generally, you should be focused on upgrading the troops dominating your army composition, which is to say the troops that you're using, and whose upgrade will therefore benefit you the most. For the author of this guide, this would mean raiders first, then wall breachers, then heavy infantry, then whatever is available until upgraded until the next age.

Q: How should my army composition look like?
A: Whatever you have the most fun with and what fits with your strategy. If you're going for max loot, you're mostly best served with a few heavy infantry, a wall breacher and lots of raiders. The higher you get up in age and medal range, the more wall breachers you should add for effective looting. If you're focused more on wiping out your opponents base, for whatever reason, you'll do best with a mixed army, which is to say a bit of everything. It's good FAQ. There are still some edge cases the general guidelines don't work but overall it's very good guidance.
