Does anyone use Gatlings/Machine Gunners on a regular basis?

It just seems that they die too quick so I use riflemen instead. It's kinda too bad because I think that there is great potential in them if they wouldn't die so quick or wouldn't take up 4 troops spaces.

Tell me your experiences with them? Are they useful?

I find them to be quite useful. I usually have two in my army and i drop them in with the archers. They do quite well. On occasion they die but so do other troops.

But, are they better than having 4 ranged infantry in their place? I ask this because, going by the statistics, I don't see the damage by Gatling guns against defenders to equal or exceed the damage against defenders number of 4 ranged infantry units.

Some place say they slow enemy and reduce damage, and they make multiple damage like redoubt. So 1 or 2 is good enough. But it hard to measure the effects.

For me they're not worth it. They may slow the enemy down and eventually kill it but the riflemen/ranged shooters kill quicker. I'd rather kill the enemy than slow down his rate of fire.

That's what I've been thinking too. Will it be a good idea to skip the factory in Enlightenment Age, complete the other upgrades, move to the Industrial Age, and build an airstrip (without building a factory at all)?

I use HTs with my Roman nation but I wish I had left the factory til later with my Brit nation. I woulda built it anyway - just for being a completionist - but I could've used the oil elsewhere first.
Although I have heard people use the guerrillas with good success - and I have seen the little b@st@rds run around my base causing havoc - so it all depends on which units you want to use.

Thank you, Ravenlord! Yes, I'll build it eventually too (I like completing every upgrade and adding every building too, just like you said :)), but, I'm just trying to prioritize things. I've recently reached the Enlightenment Age, and haven't added the refinery, but, have been rapidly upgrading everything else. Probably, the absence of oil is making my base unattractive for attacks, and I'm able to hold enough resources for upgrades, without getting attacked too much. So, had an idea of skipping oil entirely till I get to Industrial Age, complete other upgrades of troops and defensive buildings, and then, add oil refinery, and build an air strip first, ahead of building the factory. Just bouncing off this idea. Inputs welcome from experienced players like yourself and others. Thank you :)

Mechanically they are a good unit, and the AoE they do can be worth more than 4 riflemen in the right circumstances. I don't currently use them, though, because they have THE worst AI in the game. They make the other units' AI look brilliant.

The airstrip is vastly superior to the factory, so yes, this makes sense. The factory units are currently a mess and I'm hoping they get some love down the road.

I use 2-3 heavy gatling guns in my attacks in conjunction with at least 15 ranged riflemen, 4-5 cannons and 1 healing cart. Heavy Gatling Guns do slow the enemy down and still do damage. With them I never fear enemy troops no matter how many come.

I agree their AI is terrible. The key is knowing and practicing using your rally option to keep your troops together.

In the end its the cannons that take down the bulk of the defenses from range. Heavy Gatling Guns job is keeping my cannons alive and is critical!

Then do you guys think it's worth to upgrade them to IA level, Machine guns? But it takes 8 days, and I won't like to upgrade a troop I'm not going to use at all... Lol.

But Ravenlord, how do I know if I need it, if I don't have the last level? :) Kinda Shakespeare question I know, but for example, Heavy Tanks, mk1 I don't use, but MK2 people says are good, how do I know if I need them if I don't have them and can't test?

For that I ask about Gatlings level 3. Maybe at level 2 I don't need, but maybe at level 3 they are worth using... :S

Maybe I should've said only upgrade what you ''use''. If you don't use troops then there's no need to upgrade them - if you ARE using them then of course upgrade!! More firepower is always better.

Or better yet: stay exactly where you are and don't upgrade a thing - I'll come looking for your base soon!

Really? I must've missed that when reading The Merchant Of Venice:

''If you prick us do we not bleed? If you tickle us do we not laugh? If you poison us do we not die? And if you wrong us shall we not come at you with fully upgraded Mk2 tanks and artillery?''

I'll have to read it again .....

Yeah, you really have to read more , and more carefully to catch the secrets allusions of Sr. William to the question , to upgrade Gatlings, or not to upgrade? :) You missed the entire point of the book it seems.
