In fact, it is really simple : just connect the road to your city (only one connection is sufficient for this to work), then place your buildings next to the road, and you will have a 10% bonus on gold you receive from your caravan , for each building connected to your road. That's all !

caravans are unaffected by your road network. the more roads you have AND the more buildings are connected to your town center the more money your roads will generate(click on roads and hit info button to see how much that is)

just so clicking on the road makes building connected to the town hall glow this is all you need to see which are connected and which are not I managed 230% boost at Iron Age just as I am entering classical age. The few I cannot link are because of how my defences are setup. Trees and gold mines don't count and don't get hit so you can put them anywhere you want.
