There and back a game, a hobbit’s tale

On this eve of the 3rd anniversary of playing this game I thought I would write down my reflections on playing for so many years. First of all when typing in the title of this essay, I planned on using the title of another well known tale but autocorrect changed “again” to “a game” ... no kidding, it really did. After thinking about it a bit, I let it be and moved on feeling it very appropriate.

So much has happened in this game we all love and sometimes hate to play. A lot of great players and friends have come and gone over the almost 3 years I have been playing. When I first arrived on Domi, I was really excited about starting a brand new game. A game unlike any other I had played on my phone before. The idea of actually being able to direct my troops on the field was an awesome change from just picking the army and getting a report of what happened. The first time I saw my town leveled I was devastated. I didn’t know at the time that it was still there and I didn’t have to build it all over again. Lol I wonder how many times my little town/big city would have had to be rebuilt if that were the case?

Come to think of it, I feel a lot like my little town when one of these updates come out. Before it’s released I get excited about the possibilities. Sometimes it’s a victorious win (the release of World War) and sometimes I’m left flattened (HtG-gate and android crown-fest). I must admit there have been many times I’ve thought about quitting and this is the closest I’ve been, but frankly there isn’t anything out there that holds my interest like this game. All the glitches, mismatches, cheaters and unfortunate luck notwithstanding it really is a fun game to play. Attacking other players to gain resources to build a better town, to research better tech, to gain in level and age is very tedious but also rewarding especially when marching off to battle with my teammates. Sharing ideas and tips with other players not only helps me build a better town but also good friendships. The community in this game is phenomenal and is a major reason I’m still playing.

And while I gripe and comment on here about the stuff that bothers me about the game, I know there’s no such thing as perfection when it comes to most things. Anyone who has ever tried to program something or complete a many layered project or organize something with a lot of people involved would agree that it’s hard to think of everything. You can test stuff until you think you covered it all and someone out there will find the flaw. The string in the tapestry that once pulled, sends a chain of events cascading into chaos. To the player, in the end this is just a game. But to the devs it is their life and their livelihoods and it sucks big time when stuff goes wrong.

Life is messy. And that is why we retreat to this silly little game and pay various amounts of time and money building our silly little towns to hide out in. Question is where do the devs find their respite? Food for thought next time something doesn’t go as expected. Thank you to the devs for giving me my escape, flattened town and all. And thank you to all the friends I’ve made in this community, may the Nexon gods be kind to you and your silly little towns.

Now I’m curious to hear from you (especially some of the old timers that are still kickin in this game). How long have you been playing? Why are you still here dominating after all this time? If the devs want to share too I think many would be happy to hear your stories.

Hugs and kisses,
Gail

Started playing this 3 years ago, but I am playing this only recently because I get a lot of free time at college. New stuff got me attracted, but it looks like the same problems are here, yet again.

I’ve been playing since I can’t remember when ... at least two years. At first I got wrapped up into the medals race and got really frustrated when the game would fail me and set me back for reasons outside my control. When WW came out, I just quit because Nexon didn’t seem to care about all the cheaters and BHG didn’t seem to care about all the bugs. Today I view those two like the continually-recurring Bosses you might find in other games. You not only have to compete with the other players, but against a constantly shifting ruleset! The game would be stale without that added excitement! I’m 6k XP from level 220 and CWA on my main account. Loonies is closing in on 5k medals albeit not the “standard or intended process”. Sucks about crown sales and broken features. And attack cheats in MP and WW, but those seem to be way down compared to the early days. I see a few bans. All in all, the game is better now than when I quit the first time if that says anything.

Been playing over 2 years, about 2.5 I think, and I still enjoy the game enormously for all of its faults. Of course there are things I'd like to change, but when I look at what else is out there, this is still far and away my favorite. I played Game of War: Fire Age at a high level before this ans spent thousands of dollars on it, and in the end just walked away from it. I don't have to do with this one, and it's just as much fun.

I have 5 accounts now, but recently gave one to someone else, and am looking to give another away - solely for time reasons. not for lack of interest (I think 3 accounts is the sweet spot). I am leadership in 2 alliances and have met a lot of new people through this game. I'm in it for the long haul and have no plans to leave. I'll play this game until the last server craps out and the last farm is maxed out.

I understand that the game has problems - matchmaking is screwed (but I can understand its imperfections and compromises), there are still lots of disconnects and glitches, but over time I believe it's definitely gotten better. I still get excited about new content. I frankly don't understand all of the complaining I see here; worst case, it's still just a game, even if you've spent money on it.

I for one hope the devs keep working on this one for a long time to come.

Playing over two years. I too have seen a lot of good people come and go. Yes the game can be frustrating and could have more features, and could let you level up faster. But with the number of people playing there is no way the devs are going to come remotely close to making everyone happy. Got hit by a hacker a month or so ago, complained to CS and was given 300 crowns in short order, I think that’s fair.

Nice post, GailWho! Sent me down my memory lane!

I started playing the game about 2.5 years ago. I started with one base, then, started a second, and finally a third! Purely to try out playing as different nations and build different wonders, and try out slightly different play styles in each.

I kept playing till the end of 2016, and then, took nearly a year's break from the game. Then, I returned to the game by the end of 2017.
I'm mostly a F2P player, and I also play only when I can find some free time, so, my progress has been a bit slower than I would have liked it to be, but, it's still a nice experience to grind through the upgrades and watch the base build up and advance over time!
I would agree with most others that for all its flaws, it's still an entertaining game that has a solid core idea/concept and a solid fundamental game design. And, nothing comes close to stress busting than to bust out a few bases either in wars or in multi-player after a day's work - it's an escape, as Gail said. That also means I love the attacking aspect of this game more than the defense aspect. To each, his own!

I've also liked the community and the alliance family that I'm in, and it has also been a major reason I've played and I continue to play.
My wife has been playing this game longer than I have, and she has built up three bases too! She was the one who brought me to this game, and to the alliance family, and back again from my year long break too! We love playing the game together, especially over the weekends - nothing like starting out a Training Blessing session together, and showing off the loot every now and then to each other when we hit upon a good base, and making each other jealous in the process, and engage in some friendly competitive banter about game progress and upgrades completed :) Thanks, Empire! :)

Of course, I have had to adapt with nearly every major change in the game, but, that keeps it refreshing and challenging.

I also love the forum and the interactions here - it started way back when Ravenlord, Gail, and a few others were around :) Things have changed here from what it used to be, but, that's how life is - everything changes, and we adapt and move on! I love answering questions or offering suggestions to others here as much as possible and those are the threads I mostly focus on, and occasionally participate in a few discussions, and even more occasionally, vent out on something :) I try and minimize the last part, but, hey, I'm human too :)

To sum it up, it has had its high points, and its lows! But, it's still an escape for me from my routine.
Wishing everyone in the community the very best at this opportunity to reflect back on the road travelled so far!

Cheers and happy gaming, everyone! :)

I’ve been playing for just on 3 years and I’ve only got 2 accounts while I personally know some who have 5 or more, which I always thought was crazy but this game, despite it’s flaws (which have gotten more frequent lately), has a great unique mechanic compared to many others.
I don’t play this for the traditional alliance experience as others do but I often think of this game as a metaphor for life. It’s not designed as an ‘end game’; instead you invest, grow as much or as little as you invest, change, adapt, progress, get jealous of others (which motivates you :D), get frustrated at losses, enjoy rewards, etc. And that’s just on my own. I imagine the same experiences can be said for being part of an alliance.
The good outweighs the bad, although it would be great if there was a little less bad as time goes on. But that too is what happens in life. :D
