This was my reply to another post.. but I felt it was too important to be missed out by new players as a reply somewhere at the bottom of that topic.

Just some pointers for new members [wish someone had told me this when I was new :) lol ]

1. The game is skewed towards those who prefer to attack often. If you're a defensive player using lots of peace treaties, you won't get too far, too fast. Be active and attack as often as possible. Don't worry too much about getting attacked and losing some resource. You can get back lost resources with just a few well placed attacks.

2. Whenever you enter a new age, make sure you upgrade your troops first. [I prefer upgrading the following troops depending on the age you're in] :
  • Ranged infantry: Slinger -> Bowman -> Composite Bowman -> Archer -> Crossbowman -> Arquebusier -> Musketeer -> Rifleman -> Submachine Gun
  • Ranged siege weapons: Ballista -> Bombard -> Cannon -> Artillery -> Howitzer
  • Heavy Cavalry: Horseman -> Cataphract -> Knight -> Lancer -> Cuirassier -> Tank -> Medium Tank
3. Also don't forget to upgrade your Raiders, they are cheap and can loot lots of resources, as long as you use them cleverly. [I sometimes go in with 45-50 raiders and loot 300-400k costing me just 35-40k to rebuild the raiders after the successful attack]

4. Don't worry about medals. Just focus on getting the maximum resources (food and gold ..later ages- oil). So safeguard your Mills and Markets ...don't worry too much about your City Centre. [I have left mine outside the walls ...usually they end up attacking it and I get a few hours of automatic peace treaty as a result ..especially when i'm asleep ;) ]

5. Remember that the first wave of defending troops from the enemy base comes out the fastest (within a few seconds), the second wave takes around 20-25 seconds. So don't use all your troops at once in the beginning. Use some of your troops to attract the first wave of enemy defenders away to one corner of the map, so that you can loot the rest with more ease.

6. Always keep raiding and attacking and you won't have to spend $$. Use peace treaties sparingly, usually only when you're upgrading key buildings.

7. It's good advice to not rush the age you're in! [I have maxed out every age that I was in before moving to the next, except for Enlightenment Age, I felt the Industrial age Air Attack Bombers and Planes helped me loot more much faster so I quickly moved to Industrial age.]

8. Choose a good alliance, where the leaders and top players are willing to share best troops and knowledge with you. As mentioned by someone earlier, don't be afraid to skip alliances if your current alliance isn't active much. [I have had my share of bad alliances and leaders ..ended up starting my own alliance ;) ] Good leaders will not only accept your troops when you choose to donate but also will donate their best ones to you so that you can win battles!

9. Upgrade your War Academy tactics as you advance in the game. Effective use of tactics in battles, can essentially render the enemy base severely weak and give your troops the tactical advantage. [I usually use a 'Protect tactic' on my troops almost immediately after I drop them in the enemy base. I then go on to use 'Sabotage tactic' on buildings that spawn Heavy Cavalry and 'First Aid tactic' on those troops that I originally used the 'Protect tactic' on (mainly heavy cavalry) and also using 'Betrayal tactic' on the forest defenders, since the forest defenders are usually the highest level of defenders the enemy base will produce, unless they have researched 'Level 8 - Resistance' in the Library or have Bunkers producing Heavy Tanks. It's also a good idea to use 'Betrayal tactic' on forest defenders, since they mostly enter the base away from canons and towers. If you use 'Betrayal tactic', for example, on enemy heavy cavalry and this heavy cavalry is standing close to an enemy tower or canon, it can easily get decimated, rendering your 'Betrayal tactic' ineffective.]

10. War gives you a chance to get lots of loot for something as little as just a single victory star. So don't worry if you don't have awesome troops. Just do your best and try to get that single victory star. If you choose to take part in War, make sure you follow the rules of attacking set by the alliance.

11. The Command Post only loses 8% of the resources it has within it, each time it is attacked; unlike your Mills and Markets which lose about 25% of resources with every attack. So claim you war loot from the command post only when you really need it, otherwise just leave it there inside the command post. Unless of course you have already busted the capacity of the command post, in which case you will need to either upgrade it or claim the loot so that you can re-fill the loot from new wars.

Feel free to add more suggestions and advice below.

Good advice. I differ in one point. I suggest you deploy all your troops together, unless you're "sacrificing" them. I have learned with experience that it is better not to divide troops and deploy or fan them out when deploying.

Agreed, if you are after the medals and your target is to destroy the base.

But my advice is based not for gaining medals but gaining loot only ;) and essentially "losing" battle medals but gaining loads of loot. From my experience, this is the way a new comer can really progress fast. I have seen many new comers (including myself) protecting the City Centre (don't know why? for medals??). Medals are largely inconsequential to progress unless you want the crown rewards at different medal levels that become progressively unattainable.

So if you want to loot, deploy 1-2 troops to attract the first wave of defenders and then use the other end to loot the base. I just use 45-50 raiders and practically wipe out all resources every single time, in the process losing medals and battles but getting to upgrade my buildings and troops with the loot super fast. In effect, allowing me to loot and defend even better as I become stronger. Only in Wars, winning really matters as the number of stars gained decides whether you win or lose the war.

I agree that medals are inconsequential. Remember that the defenders will attack those troops only until they are alive. So, I hope you use HC as distractors. You need to protect the TC in wars only.

The only caveat to this is that each age has a loot cap. The most anyone can take from you. If you are at your loot cap then the enemy can take the loot cap from your mills and markets and can also get the extra 8% from your command post. That said I still leave almost all my resources in my command post.

One question, what are the buildings you left unmaxed before advancing to the Industrial Age?

All buildings that helped me to increase my attack strength were the ones I maxed out ...for example, Temple, Library, Armory, Barracks etc. After that whatever surplus resources I had I used them on defensive buildings, usually using my strong attacking troops to keep regularly looting and using that loot to upgrade my defenses.

But to answer your questions, I left quite a few buildings (like farms, caravans, garrisons, towers) unmaxed before I went to Industrial Age.
