This weekend is our fifth Black History Matters Event focusing on the Scramble for Africa in the late 19th century.

The colonization, conquest, and division of the African continent by European nations during New Imperialism became known as the Scramble for Africa. Exploration of Africa during the 19th century revealed a wealth of natural resources that European powers competed over until the start of World War I. The Berlin Conference of 1884-85 set the stage for the Scramble for Africa by eliminating or overriding most existing forms of African autonomy and self-governance. African natural resources were siphoned from the continent for the betterment of European industrial economies. European control of the continent grew from a mere 10% in 1870, to nearly 90% by 1914. The area of Central Africa now known as the Democratic Republic of Congo is an example of the devastation brought on by this new era of imperialism. In 1885, Léopold II of Belgium, acting independently of the Belgium government, established the Congo Free State. His aim was to exploit the area's ivory and rubber resources. Free State officials’ ruthless treatment of the Congolese included mass killings and slave labor, resulting in the deaths of 5 to 10 million people.

During the event you can get 25% off Missile Silo, S.A.M Battery, Museum, and University building upgrades and 33% off Transport, Bazooka, and Armored Car troop upgrades, as well as the Assault Rally War Tactic.
(Event lasts from 14:00 UTC 7/31 until 14:00 UTC 8/3.)
