What if, starting in perhaps the gun powder age, you could create up to one colony base per age (to a maximum of three), remote but attached to your main base? Maybe if the player won three 5-star attacks in a row, they could access their first colony, and it could cost something like 3 million gold and 3 million food.
Then, if a player attacks someone who has attached bases, they could gain the potential to attack an adjacent base (perhaps 100% destruction of the first attacked base would add 2 minutes to the clock to allow them to march on an adjacent base).
And as for players with multiple bases making an attack, perhaps the troops from the main base lead the attack, and then troops from colony bases can be dropped as support after every minute (for a maximum of two support drops).
