What is the best level to build walls to in enlightenment? Mine are only level 7.

Upgrade them to the level 8, then you will be able to upgrade using food

Also, do not max walls at any ages, keep them a bit lower as when you move up ages, you can use it to sink extra resources. This makes you save time (looting for walls is a grind) and you will not get attacked. Walls can be built as and when you have resources. But aim for level 8 so as poster above said, food can then be used to up walls.

Yes i'm slowly building up to level 8. Because i didn't fully understand the game i got to enlightenment age too quickly. I get attacked and raided every time i log off. Slowly trying to upgrade all defensive stuff.

Level 11 walls are max for Enlightenment. I suggest ya cap them every age so ya don't get attacked so often. Others will say different. In my experiences capped walls have helped me more than when I didn't cap them so go figure ;-]

Level 8 seems to offer best bang for the buck. Big jump in hit points from lvl 7. I think level 9 wall is plenty all the way to global. It slows the troops enough for the defensive troops/building to do damage. After that it seems to only increase by 1800 hit points per level.

I recommend getting lvl 8 walls in EA. You can go for 9 if you feel like staying at the end of EA a bit longer. Definitely don't go higher, unless you're unemployed and raiding bases in dominations all day. Btw, capping = maxing out, getting the highest possible.

Don't forget, the lvl of walls affects the war rankings. If your walls are much stronger than an industrial teammates walls, you can find yourself in higher place in war ranking. Upgrade them just when your other defense buildings are capped!

By capping he is saying to get them to the highest possible lvl for the age

Working walls while buildings or research is going on is how I cap my walls/gates every level. Just got to have a citizen always free. If you're a good scheduler, walls can be done before your base is ready to age up. Yes, it will effect war weight (see faq). I'm in a group that accepts my strategy, maybe its cause I draw a lot of Industrial and some Global aged attacks during war. Last war I soaked up 4 IA and a GLA and still wasn't flattened (5★).

It's good strategy to gain the amount needed for whatever upgrade you want to do. Then log off once that upgrade is started and your storages are back down low ;-]

I have all lvl 8 walls now plus some lvl 9 in the central area but my base is still being defeated regularly.

And it will continue to be as long as you're in EA, regardless of what level your walls are. EA is probably the weakest age for defense, because the power gap between IA and EA is so big, meaning the IA people in multiplayer will wreck your base no matter what. I'm in IA myself, and I will wipe any EA base if the loot is big enough, even if it has full defensive blessings active.

The only solution is to move into IA and get yourself that 4th mortar and some tank depots and anti tank guns. That will stop many people from attacking you. Of course much depends on your base layout too.

Our alliance leader said my layout is good. Advised me to get all lvl 9 walls and get some generals up to a strong level. My strongest general is 9 at the moment. And i'm also strengthening mortars, ballista, redoubts, garrison, tower and stables. Each one takes 4-5 days. I've researched Mansa and Hiawatha plus plenty of library research. 126 troop space as Romans.

Don't get too caught up in walls. I am almost 3/4 of the way done with level 15 yellow walls and I still get destroyed regularly in war. With an army of wall breakers and motorcycle raiders, people can still take my oil and resources. Walls help, but a strong defense with solid base design is even better. A combination of both is golden. Most people recommend level 9 walls because after level 9, the cost of upgrade is enormous for limited HP gains (until level 15). After level 9, upgrade walls at your leisure. As a lower level player (as I was), all you can do is out-raid your losses and spend down resources to avoid getting gutted. Upgrade your offense fully, then the pertinent defenses until your base holds up decently to full scale attacks and move on. As an aside, I never found raiding for walls as easy as I do now. High level planes and troops on abandoned bases make effortless resource gathering.

Sure, anyone can do well on abandoned bases.
The true test is when a base is properly upgraded and/or designed.
