Farms and Caravans are useful and balanced so far.

They are actually a great time killer and motivation for casual and econ players. Most players don't have time to play hours everyday, so they upgrade the cheap econ buildings first. And feed all the greedy hardcore players to keep the game running. If everyone thinks econ is useless, then there will be nothing to raid and game will be dead.

Other than the troop upgrade to defeat hard lucrative bases, nothing else will beat the farms and caravans in terms of econ. A little is still better than nothing.
Think about the end Medieval age,
8 caravans with 20% bonus from wonder, the production rate is pretty solid. 1170 X 8 X 120% per hour, that's 270K a day right here!
400% road connection with 100% bonus from wonder, 4200 per hour if I remember correctly, that's 100K a day right there.
With all the trees and mines and animals collecting. Medi and Gun Powder age are pretty fun to play without spending money and more than 2 hours of raiding for me.
Enlightenment age cost will be ridiculously HUGE, but that is where non-addicted players will never reach.

When developer releases a free game, they have to make sure the new game is friendly and gives a good enough reward system to hook players on the boat.
ALSO they have to make sure the end game is unplayable and leave addictive free players and light spenders a good amount of frustration, so some of the frustration will turn into their profit.

------------------------------------------
The only problem is the future ages, the income growth pattern is not suitable compare to the cost growth pattern. If free players get frustration in too many ages and can't follow and provide top players the feeling of domination, game might die out.
It would be good to maybe rework on the math growth pattern and cost pattern, or introduce a new resource and start a new pattern just like they are doing with oil right now.
I've seen GREE's game falling down the past 4 years, but hope this one could last longer.

While the free players are part of the community... The developers make these games to make money... The free players don't really carry much weight ... Not near as much as those folks plunking down hundreds of dollars... Or even tens of dollars for that matter...

Free players are there to feed money players and make them feel on top of the world and willing to spending more seeing those competitive free players out there.
Free players also keep the game popular and good rating, some new crackhead might see this game and pay for it.
So it is actually a extremely important community for more potential profit in the future.
