Maybe as an added bonus... Add a fishing option when a player gets to the water... This could be a great way to earn extra food... A good idea to earn gold could be diving for pearls in later ages...

I could see this as schools of fish, that players could discover -- as you say -- if and when a player makes it to the water (by clearing at least one forest 'block' to gain access to it). Players would gather food from these resources as they do Fruit Trees including intervals for respawn.
