In 1971, the Apollo 14 commander fit a 6-iron head on the end of a sample-collecting rod and dropped two golf balls on the surface of the moon. He shanked the first but managed to get a solid piece of the second, and it’s estimated the ball traveled as much as two miles across the lunar landscape. Though it is commonly believed that he smuggled the equipment aboard, he at least had the approval of the NASA director, who consented on the promise that he would only hit the shots if all had gone well with the mission.
