You should start learning how to use shooter-arty-horse-healers because that is the mainstream tactics for later ages to use. Heavy and long range defense make infantry hard to use later. Start by using 2 healer-4 horse-3 bombard and the rest is shooters.

3 horse...3 cannon...2 healers....20 shooters....12 Heavy landsknechts
Coupled with Teutonic fury and armour and weapon blessing
Tactics...3 sabotage and 1 protect...

I retrain almost all my horses and landsknechts all the time...but the rest...
ALWAYS COMES BACK WITH LOOT.
