I've been staring at my atomic age base layout for a while now, and I realize, it sucks. I don't know what my problem is though, I just can't wrap my head around the layout needed to actually protect my base from attacks. Now I know I big problem is that my defensive structures are too weak to provide decent defense but I know my layout is a huge problem too.

My biggest problem is... that I don't know how to build it, I don't know how to use the base editor in order to actually build the base, it might be the touch screen interface, I feel as though I could do this if I had a keyboard and mouse for some reason. But I guess what I really want are design ideas. I've looked at my allies' bases and tried to recall the best defended bases I've seen when I go out to attack, but I just can't seem to build any layout that works. Can someone help me with this please? Even advice for now to use the editor would be helpful.

I find that I find one I like and copy it... makes sure I have similar land clearance as them... then count out the walls from the edges as I put them down and copy it entirely... then you have to tweak for the buildings you have. Put it up for challenge and tweak tweak tweak.

yes, just copy someone and adapt what you don't like ... that's the best way.

but if you want advice how to start your own, pick a pattern that you like for your walls and fit the buildings into it.
one big box is the worst, the walls do nothing useful. a grid is the other extreme.
imo the simplest quality base design is the walls just in rows, or you will sometimes see chevrons.
my first base was rows of walls, closed at the ends. some people intermittently close the ends of rows.

The best you can ever do is reduce the amount of damage they can do to your base. If you are in atomic and dont have at least maxed global defenses, then that is a big part of your problem.

Remember that walls and buildings are not just there to stop attackers. The advice I use for both my bases when I was Gunpowder/EA is to make your attacker zig-zag to get resources.
Make the attackers waste time by going 'this' way, then 'that' way, using your walls to 'direct' them where you want them to go, all the while your towers are shooting at them or your troops are slowing them down.

Great advice.

Actually you're better off as Atomic player without fully maxed Global defenses than as Global player with the same exact defenses (and I say this as a rushed Atomic), for the simple reason that the attack pool is still the same players (there is no CWA) minus IA. Plus you appear more intimidating to attacker than a Global player even if your level is the same because there are a number of extra unknowns for the attacker to wonder:

- Does he have a 3rd SAM? Are his SAMs maxed? There is a huge damage boost to them in Atomic.
- Did he max his Resistance research? He had a lot more time to do so than Global player.
- Does his TC have field howitzers inside? If he's Atomic, chances are his clan mates are Atomic too.
- Does he have +15% damage boost to towers from Radar research?
