[History geekery] What real-life tank is the battle tank art based on?

I know there's some artistic license going on here, but so far I've been able to identify the real-life models for the tanks in this game. There generic light tank, as the blurb says, looks like the French Renault FT, and the French unique tanks also seem to be what they say on the tin: the St. Chamond, R-35, and now R-36. The Greek unique tanks seem to be modeled on British tanks. The Companion Tank looks like the Whippet and the ELAS Tank looks like a Matilda II. I have never seen a Hellenic Tank, so I have no idea what their real-life model might be.

But what's the generic Battle Tank art based on? The blurb talks about the Soviet T-34, but the art sure doesn't look like one. For one thing, even allowing for some inevitable distortions to fit the game's style, the turret seems way too far back. So does it look more like a T-34 than I think it does, is it just an embellishment of the M-4 Sherman that the Medium Tank is based on, or is there some other real-life model I'm overlooking?

well I know the merc (camp lvl 5 (?) ) tank is based on the German WW1 tank, but they never had flame throwers in their tanks lol

I agree the Battle tank resembles the M4 (or maybe the Patton?) and I think the HT Mk3 resembles the Tiger Mk1.

I've been arguing for more realistic tanks and planes based on actual nation tanks & planes for months - c'mon Nexon, surely you have the ability by now?? My Brits want their Hurricanes !!!

ps: think how cool it would be to see French R-35s battling German Panzers !!!

No Title

Here's the Hellenic Greek Tank for your viewing pleasure. Is perhaps the Valentine tank that replaced the Matilda II?
Btw the in game description doesn't really say much unfortunately. photo7823.jpg

Thanks for posting that, ReekyBullet. It doesn't look much like a Valentine to me. The armor over the treads is a pretty distinctive feature of the Matilda and it's here too. My guess is that the artists dreamed up a variant Matilda with a much fatter gun and used that for the Hellenic tank. It wouldn't be the first time the graphics played fast and loose with historical models. The Mark I HT looks a lot like the British Mark IV, but the artists added a gun to the little "turret" at the top. In the real-life Mark IV, the guns were all carried in the sponsons on the sides. The game's Mark II HT with a full-on turret is, as far as I can tell, completely made up.

So I'm guessing now that the generic Battle Tank is also the art team riffing on the Sherman ("Hey - let's make it chubbier!") rather than a representation of a real-life tank.
