I Have the Crowns... Do I Need the Resources?

It seems like it should be easy to find the answer for this one but nope!

I have a lot of crowns saved up and want to use them soon. If I choose to upgrade with crowns from the start, do I need the food/gold/oil resources for the upgrade cost?

For example, let's say I want to upgrade my temple to level 6. It takes 4.5 million food and takes 8 days. However, if I hit the "Instant!" button (for the price of 1,257 crowns), do I need to have that 4.5 million food in the bank?

I know I would at least need to have the capacity for that many resources, but do I need to have the resources actually saved.

Note: No, I'm not planning to use crowns to upgrade the temple. It was just an example for illustrative purposes.

You don't "need" the resources, but it will cost more crowns if you don't have the full resources for the upgrade.

The price shown to "upgrade now" in crowns includes the crown cost to rush that period of time (it is fixed, same cost for the period of time regardless of # of workers) plus the cost to buy any required resources you lack. So if you try to upgrade now and have the 4.5 million food in question, it will cost x. If you have less than 4.5 million, it will cost x+y - where y depends on how much less food you have than required. 8 days with all the required resources is 1257 crowns as you noted. You will be unable to instant upgrade anything if you cannot hold enough resources for it.

The upshot - never crown anything without the required resources. The price is ridiculously high, and will often more than double the crown cost compared to rushing it when you have the correct resources available.
