Noticed something funny with my defensive general

I just got to GP age, I have two level 5 generals. When my generals played on defense, they used to come out and show a small number 5. I just looked at a defence replay, when my general came out, he had no number. The attacker dropped a level one general (the general showed a small one icon). The level one general then smoked (killed off very easily) my level 5 general. I have the new update (sigh). Is the behaviour of the general a bug caused by the new update, or just a new behavior caused by the upgrade to GP. I also thought a level 5 general should easily kill a level one general.
