Seasonal Leaderboard

I've had this game installed long time ago, I usually play on and off, that's why there are a couple of things that I don't get sometimes.
I have played the last season and was the first in the leaderboard with a reasonable score (6k or something? I can't remember) I am in the industrial age
This season, I noticed that after a couple of days, the top players in the list have scored a very high score of 15 - 17k which I find so unusual unless you play 24/7 and have the game online all the time so no one will be able to attack you.
Is there something that I miss? Is that normal?

lol 15-17k is like nothing. It is achievable in 2 days. Many players end up with 40-60k. Anything above 100k is a lot and there are some maniacs that reach up to 300k.

but how come I was the first in the previous leaderboard although I didn't get such a score? did players just woke up and decided to play XD

the less you play, the more chances that you will be in a group of many inactive players. That is why you got so easily the artifact in the previous season but not now. The game sees you as active, so you are put in a more active group of players.
