So I have 3 artifacts in the museum that give me 60% off university research time then I have 10% off more from my space needle and 5% more from library when I went to finish up sultan without artifacts it shows 24 hours ..with artifacts it only takes off 8 hours now granted I thought there was a cap of 75 or 85 percent but only 8 hours ?? Should be minum of 12 hours off the artifacts alone right??

1) 3 artifacts and 60% is quite literally not possible, either you meant 3 artifacts 45% or 4 artifacts 60%
2) the 24 hours is shown after reduction. The time reduction from space needle, microprocessor (and possibly Academic timetables in parliament and Mansa/Chief) is already added to the original time and the 24 hours you see is the reduced time after all those reductions, if you want to know the actual time of the research check it with https://dominations.fandom.com/wiki/Sultan_Saladin first and then caluclate to see if you are getting full boosts pr is there a discrepancy in what you are supposed to get and what you are getting

Also they reduced the number of citizens required for other things which freed up more to put in the university. Not to mention all the discounts and free speed ups.

Start with most important ones to your needs. I still recommend finish all uni and library. They have made it super easy to have uni completed before the end of info age.

The artifacts for reducing research time are easy to get.

Remember folks skipping things tend to come back to bite ya in the butt.

How do these artifacts actually work though?

Is it enough to kickstart some research when using these artifacts, after which you can replace them and the faster completion time will stay
Or do you have to keep those artifacts active throughout the entire research?

Or... maybe it's enough to just use these artifacts towards the end of the research to bring the time remaining down to zero?

What I do is equip artifact then start research. If I decide I need to raid for resources etc I just equip the battle artifacts then before I log off I replace the decrease Uni research artifacts. Do this until all research is complete switch them in and out.

Step 1 pick uni research
step 2 put your soul revers etc artifact on display in main hall
Step 3 if you need to attack and need to replace uni artifact do so fight your battle and replace the uni artifacts before you log off. This maximizes the reduction.

Many thanks. So basically research time "runs faster" only when the artifacts are on display, which of course then makes sense to use them most of the time and only switch them out for things like battles.

no, that is wrong
The duration is determined when the research is started. As soon as the research is running, it doesn't matter what happens in the museum; you can continue to display the artifact or change it, this has no effect.

Is this something new?

It was available through buying some sort of chest(s) using crowns or tokens (from the traveling merchant), and then hoping for a 1% lucky draw to get this artifact. So not an easy one to get if this happens to be the only way to get your hands on it...
