Temple of Artemis Event 9/24 - 10/15
Quickly build and expand your city during the Temple of Artemis event! The last of our Seven Wonders resource boost events!
The people of Ephesus understood Artemis differently than other Greeks. Perhaps because her local cult predated the foundation of the Greek city, they believed she was born nearby rather than on the island of Delos. They also assigned her traits of the indigenous Anatolian mother goddess. ‘Artemis Ephesia’ looks quite alien next to the idealized forms of mainland Greek sculpture.
A succession of temples were built to venerate this unique goddess. The fabled riches of king Croesus of Lydia funded the first truly grand Artemision in the sixth century BCE. Each one was destroyed by some manmade or natural catastrophe and then rebuilt by the wealthy city. Only the advent of Christianity finally ended the cycle, with the temple’s permanent destruction coming at the hands of a religious mob in 401 CE.
Though superficially similar to other Greek temples, the Artemision stood out for its beauty and immensity. It was believed to be the first building constructed entirely out of marble. Fine artworks filled its colonnades, and its area measured four times that of the Parthenon. Indeed, many ancient writers who had seen the Seven Wonders ranked the Temple of Artemis as the greatest by far.

Autumnal Equinox Day Event 9/24 - 10/1
This week is our Autumnal Equinox Day Event!
Autumnal Equinox Day is a public holiday in Japan, also known in Japanese as Shubun no Hi. It usually occurs between September 22 or 23 and indicates the astronomical arrival of autumn.
Prior to 1947, it was the date of Shuki Koreisai, which is an event relating to the Shinto religion. After WWII, the day was rebranded as a non-religious holiday for the sake of separation of religion and state in Japan's postwar constitution.
On Autumnal Equinox Day, people will reconnect with their families to tend to the graves of ancestors and visit shrines and temples. People also celebrate the good weather and autumn harvest by enjoying outdoor activities and eating special sweet rice balls.

Library of Alexandria Event 9/26 - 10/3
The Library of Alexandria Event has begun!
The Great Library of Alexandria was one of the largest and most famous libraries of the Ancient World. The fate of the Great Library has been argued extensively. The main point of contention being whether it survived until the Arab conquest of Alexandria in the 7th century. There is evidence that the destruction of the two libraries, the Royal Library and a daughter library inside the Serapeum, occurred at different times. The Royal Library was victim to Julius Caesar’s involvement in a civil war in Egypt between Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII. To gain the upper hand over the Ptolemaic forces, Caesar set fire to the enemy fleet in Alexandria. It is believed that the destruction caused by that fire destroyed the Royal Library. The daughter library in the Serapeum, is believed to have survived until near the end of the 4th century. However, once Christianity became the one and only religion acknowledged throughout the empire, an imperial decree was issued sanctioning the demolition of temples in Alexandria. This led to an attack on the Serapeum, resulting in the destruction of the temple and the second library with it.
