History of Soccer Event 3/24 - 3/31
This week is our History of Soccer Event!

Kicking ball games have been observed across many countries and cultures throughout history. Despite having similarities to some of these games, association football, otherwise more commonly known as football or soccer, does not have a classical history. The origin of modern soccer can be traced back to 19th century Britain when the Cambridge rules were first written in 1848, which detailed several rules that are believed to have been very influential in the development of subsequent rules for soccer. By 1863, the Football Association was formed and the first comprehensive set of rules for soccer were released, later becoming known as the Laws of the Game. Today, the Laws of the Game are the codified rules of soccer and are determined by the International Football Association Board which was founded in 1886 and is currently composed of the four British football associations (England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland) and the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA). The oldest soccer competition in the world is the Football Association Challenge Cup which has been held annually since 1872. Today, soccer is played at professional and amateur levels around the world with millions of people watching matches in stadiums, on TV, and online to follow and cheer on their favorite teams.

Library of Alexandria Event 3/26 - 4/2
The Library of Alexandria Event has begun!

The Great Library of Alexandria was one of the largest and most famous libraries of the Ancient World. The fate of the Great Library has been argued extensively. The main point of contention being whether it survived until the Arab conquest of Alexandria in the 7th century. There is evidence that the destruction of the two libraries, the Royal Library and a daughter library inside the Serapeum, occurred at different times. The Royal Library was victim to Julius Caesar’s involvement in a civil war in Egypt between Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII. To gain the upper hand over the Ptolemaic forces, Caesar set fire to the enemy fleet in Alexandria. It is believed that the destruction caused by that fire destroyed the Royal Library. The daughter library in the Serapeum, is believed to have survived until near the end of the 4th century. However, once Christianity became the one and only religion acknowledged throughout the empire, an imperial decree was issued sanctioning the demolition of temples in Alexandria. This led to an attack on the Serapeum, resulting in the destruction of the temple and the second library with it.
