Can anyone tell me the best unique troops? Which nation has the strongest troops, for both defense and attacking.

Chinese are by far the best unique units, you should totally pick them as quickly as you can. Master race!

i'm only early medieval age, so please take my response with a grain of salt. the plusses or minuses can change depending on which age you're in.

i'd say that Japanese and Germans are strongest through classical by a huge margin because the heavy vandal/samurai troop seems broken at classical (it gets a huge buff). the roman infantry unit is also decent during classical, because although it's only supposed to get an HP buff, it seems to get a 50% dmg buff over the "standard" unit during classical as well.

i've heard that french and greek calvary units are the best late game, but i've also read that those units are replaced by elephant mercs late game, too.

as for longbow vs. chinese archers, longbows win by a huge margin -- they are decent at every age because with shooting units, range > almost everything else.

at medieval, my rank would be:

1. German, Japanese
2. British
3. French
4. Greek
5. Roman
6. Chinese

I picked Chinese and I find their troops to be pretty decent. Wishing I could try out the others though.

@res, I like your analysis and ranking...only thing I would change is put chinese at top and move everyone down by 1. OP, I wouldnt pick Chinese if you like games that seem to be too easy or that you are too overpowered.

For end game, I'd list it as

1. Germans and French (they require very different play styles)
2. British (so good for killing defenders)
3. Greek
4. Japanese
5. Romans
6. Chinese

- Roman special is the best

i tried to keep it objective
I don't particularly like the basic soldier at end game (too many die) so personality rank them all low
but if you know what to do with them at end-game, they can be devastating

German unit at top? Maybe only combined with rally buff. Otherwise the same as Japanese. I'd put romans at bottom based on the unit only.

@Whatwhat

The rally buff combined with the library buff is crazy good imo.
About half their rally cooldown they are running around destroying stuff at high speed

Kinda like the French, initial bonus is minor, but combined with the training blessing.... oh hell yeah

I can't imagine anything better than extra range on archers.... to hit towers WITHOUT getting hit is a huge advantage. plus it's a cheap, effective troop that takes no time to build.

The scaling on archer damage to tower health grows larger and larger each upgrade. The farther you progress in the game, the less effective they will be at taking out defenses, to an astonishing degree.

That only works given time is unlimited. It takes tons of time for archers to take down a tower, then the next one, then another layer of wall, then the ones beyond that wall and so on. In the best situation, you get one or two mills/markets. Archers are only good for counter infantry defenders.

Yes I didn't realise the special unit applied to every age or I might have picked a different country. Still, my Roman special still probably puts it in the top crowd.

I think stronger archers are pretty decent. Cant wait to try yomen combo with upgraded balistas. Stronger pikemen is all-around benefit and perhaps they would fit my playstyle better. Heavy horsemen with attack lower than pikemen is a joke, really. I can't remember someone attacked me with heavy horsemen core army... There are elephants and generals replacing them well, so I'd rate them lower for medieval for sure.
