Defender retinue on defense

I'm researching leadership so i can train a second general, but what does 'defender retinue on defense' mean?

Just got it myself. During the next defense, all generals were automatically activated. All were injured, and I had to wait for them to heal before activating again.

wha..? but which generals get auto-activated and in what order?

Sorry, just went through my defense logs and that particular attack was pretty chaotic as the attacker spawned right next to my castle. Can't tell what happened in what order, and I could be dead wrong about this having anything to do with the library upgrade.

It means that it grants each spawned General to be accompanied by additional troops. Mine got 3 Fusiliers accompanying both of my Generals when spawned (each 3 Fusiliers, total of 6 Fusiliers when both spawned)
