Someone should write a book on the struggles to look at feedback from a playerbase and critically analyze it to see what is right for your game and what isn't. What we can learn from this is that you can truly never please everyone. There are tons of problems with the game, but it's only a year old, so I'm happy to be on the ride as far as development goes. For some reason I keep seeing the word "fun" associated with what is easy or exploitable. With French/Raiders/Training Blessing this game turns into the easiest grind fest of all time. It is without a shadow of a doubt, the most efficient way to grow, hands down. It's like using magic to grow a harvest instead of using the time and effort instead. But French will still do best with training blessing. It's not a direct nerf.
The funny thing about game design is that when you give players the option to achieve an objective easily, the wise player will exploit it. Eventually everyone will when information spreads. The game designers gave us the option, why shouldn't we? That's why we have top players saying that there's no reason to play anything but the French. The game designers already know this. Let's look at raiders. Some call it "fun". Why? Because it works. It's simple. It gets you medals. It gets you gold/food/oil to upgrade your village without using much strategy aside from where to place your miners and making sure they reach their destination alive.
This turns into grinding. Why? Because there's no reason to use anything else because other things don't work. Other things slow you down, and when the game designers ask us to slow down and use strategies that have a higher risk of failing. (Because now we, the players, have to into account: timing of mortar fire, unit AI, defensive damage ratios, unit placement, rally tactics, etc.) Drop and go raiders disappear. The cash comes in slower. The failures are more frequent due to problems like AI issues or just bad player decisions. People start to reminisce about when things were easi--... I mean better.
Now, I understand that there's multiple problems in the game that need time to be ironed out, but I've fully enjoyed playing the Germans and running over bases. My game has crashed. My units have made strange decisions that have cost me my army. I've tried to rally on a building only have all my units run right next to the tower, and I've made mistakes. Eventually I hope we have to challenge ourselves to find strategies that don't involve single units. I've had no trouble with HC in my army. I use raiders when I need to get an upgrade. Why do I use raiders? Because it's easy. It's the most efficient way to earn money, and if it exists like this, I won't take time to build a full army when I can use 10 raider armies to get the job done. Is it fun? Of course not. The only thing fun about it is hitting the upgrade button.
On a side note about the new training blessing. I think that there's something at work here that goes into the very DNA of a mobile game. I have started to have nights where I play DomiNations like I would play a console game, but at the same time, the game is designed as a mobile game, which by definition, assumes that play times are short. The training blessing, by nature, defies this rule. It assumes that the player will want to play for an extended amount of time. It's almost designed to assist players during a time when you have additional time to play the game. I hope that those who play this game for an extended amount of time can appreciate this feature, because it's pretty adventurous. The best advice I can give is that if you don't have an hour to play the game, try to save the blessing for later or just get the most out of it you can. It'll be great for last pushes to an upgrade. You should be able to get a fair amount of resources even if you just use a portion of the duration. (I am speculating here) Of course, everyone won't able to do hour long sessions, but it's hard to put an umbrella over everyone. Just take a step away from the phone/Ipad while your army trains. It's awesome to stare at the game all day, but that's truly not the way the game's supposed to be played. Even if it does seem necessary sometimes. An interesting fact, I was actually hoping Big Huge Games would offer a discount for Korea on release to all its current players. Some people have been asking for a free switch from France now that it got nerfed. Here's why I'm against it. Some of us choose our nation because they're powerful. Some of us choose our nation because we like the culture in reality. We all chose a nation, and regardless of nerfs or buffs, that's the nation we have to deal with for now. I personally was choosing between Japan and Germany, and started as Japanese. I didn't like their nation bonuses, so I switched to my second choice. (Literally from defensive nation to offensive nation) Even though Japan's infantry got nerfed and couldn't shoot over walls, it doesn't mean I want them to give me 10 free switches for each tear I shed. Nation balancing is going to be the main cause for outcry to always change nations. Similar to the raider debate, if something is very overpowered, everybody will flock to it, and when it gets nerfed down to size, everyone will want to leave it.
This is very similar to competitive card game mentality. When a deck is released with all these great new (expensive) cards, everybody buys them and sees great results. (Thanks, Konami) People with less expensive decks get slaughtered (more or less) and the expensive decks reign supreme. Then, the people with cheap decks complain about being slaughtered. A new ban list gets released. The overpowered deck is completely decimated, and the competitive players all reminisce about the easy--... I mean "good" old days with their completely overpowered decks. Then, there's a period of mutation decks winning. A new set comes out. The cycle continues. Unless, of course, your cheap deck starts to take on the expensive decks. Then, your cards get banned. Or your cards randomly get banned. Depends on the type of alcohol. (This is coming from a Yu-Gi-Oh player to all my MTG boys and gals. You probably already knew)
We'll have to wait and see how nation balancing affects the option of the players. I'm hoping that maybe, eventually, every nation will have it's own distinct play style that's competitive in it's own regard. I'm glad, however, the game keeps changing. Keeps things interesting.
TDL DR Konami bans from a lottery drawing. DomiNations is a new and growing game. The developers are obviously listening, so let's see what happens.
