I understand that they are designed to be upgraded but these low level generals have a pitiful attack and then go down for several hours to recover. Shouldn't they have a better attack than my regular troops?

I don't get the point of generals. I think they should have fewer hit points but allow you to rally quicker, or let troops move faster or something. They seem kind of pointless.

Also, do you guys keep them active when you log off to help in defense? Because I'm not sure what they bring to the table there, either, except for one more body to get smashed. And then they're out of commission for 24 hours.

There probably will be more on Generals, but now, they are just one more extra leverage you can use in both attack and defense. Food is usually cheap once you finish a few crutial unit upgrade, so if you are not lack of food, you should put them in active, unless you are planning to use them only in attack. They can distract enemy's units and buy a little bit more time for your defense buildings.

I agree with twlabc123. Aside from Napoleon, generals are meant to be tanks. Even when they are upgraded, you shouldn't be expecting them to be destroying buildings left and right. They can absorb massive amounts of damage. With heals and backup, they should never go down if you used properly.

They work great in tandem with rally due to superior mobility. I use them when I need to keep my dudes free of catapult fire while they get in range.
