How to cross the present Age?

I am on the 44th level in Classical Stage. Every time I've collected the gold for age upgrade, I got looted more than usual.

So the query is, do I have to make all of the upgrades in towers, library and all to cross the age or that can be done in some different way too.
It's been two months that I've been trying to cross the classical age.

You don't have to make all the upgrades first- the problem you're having is when you start stockpiling the gold and resources to upgrade, that makes you a more attractive target for raiders. Try at least maximizing your defenses around your storages

Don't over protect your base. Let opponents clean sweep your base once to get 16h peace treaty (or put Town Centre outside your walls). Otherwise, you will keep losing resources when people keep attacking you.
