First thing you should do, is to strengthen your offense. remember the best defense is a good offense. Hence, upgrade armory and library to get better troops and techs for expanded army. Upgrade your barracks one by one and you could look at 125 troop space. Upgrade mercs camp too. With those backbones, it should be no issue to get enough resources to upgrade your defense. In fact, as upgrades take quite some time, you should collect excess resources over time.
If you need a quick shot of resources, you can go for quick resource raids with cheap and fast units that simply take out farms and gold. Combine it with a training blessing and you can get quite a few resources within 1 hour (training blessing can be up to 40+20min). Another strategy is to delay claiming resources from events. Remember you have up to 1 week to finally claim those rewards. If you time it correctly, those rewards (can't be raided) can get you over the required amount of food or gold.

From what I can see on the forum people say EA is the worst. I've been in EA for about 3 months and it was really hard at the start. Just hang in there it does get easier - I'm waiting to hit IA soon for the tanks and planes.

The TB is a bonus - it's easy/easier to raid a good amount of rss with a tb or two. Also, leave your TC exposed & protect your markets/mills - so attackers will either have a quick win or 5 star win - then give you some peace & quiet. :)

But yea - good defense or base design helps.

for me, EA is age to stay after rushing truough medeival and gunpowder. Great age, + 25 available troops space (with library), unlocks training blessing (most important thing in a game), and with those cannons you can do some dmg on a industrial bases as well. :)

In fact with library techs it's +30 troops, really helpful. Use plenty of cannons to do some real damage

First u have to know this is the worst age u gonna suffer in
second here are some tips
1- lower ur medals to 500-1200 max
2- protect one type of resource at a time (easier) and focus on it while raiding (that should be gold don't focus food and collect it with soldiers by raiding farms of abandoned bases while droping down ur medals when it gets too high)
3- utilize discount weekend events as much as possible
4- distribute ur towers equally on all sides and don't make them too exposed + put the castle in the middle of ur map (that's the best u can do now against airplanes)
good luck getting past this stupid age ur offensive power is important for raiding resources but always remember what ever u do to ur base u won't have a chance to defend against well played industrial age attacks so be quick and finish ur upgrade to jump into IA

This is why I capped gunpowder age. Once my town center finished and officially proclaimed my base EA, I started upgrades on my Armory. Then I started construction on the new buildings unlocked with EA, refinery first. While all that was working, I built the quickies: garrison, bsllista tower, walls, roads and traps. I went ahead and started getting my walls up to par with existing walls ( level 9s). I did a couple hits to garrison and ballista tower as well. Then the discounts came and threw my schedule off a touch because I like saving resources;-] So far I'm done with Armory, library, temple and war academy. I was a bit angry because after my armory finished, I found out then how much the troop upgrades were going to cost. Advice here and now: Upgrade your mills first!!!! So my mills are now capped and I got 2nd troop research going, cannons.

All in all its been relatively quiet, just some small raids and yeah if I log out with close to packed resources an industrial comes calling. Bottom line is you pay the price if your base is pushed and I recommend having some patience with this game and it wont be such a head ache guarding your stuffs. Now I'm not saying you pushed because I haven't seen your base however your description leans me to believe its pushed a touch.

Upgrade defence structures that matters. But offence is priority. Good base design helps and aim for the black medal league.. You can easily make 2 mil in 1 tb in black medal league and sometime you get hit 1 or twice for 100k in a day

As mentioned offense is much more important than defense as your base *will* get wiped. That said, regarding base setups there are a few things I've learned that really make a difference.

First off, every defensive upgrade in EA is relatively large, with stables overall being the least important vs their GPA counterpart. Garrison upgrades give your defending infantry +1 range, bringing them to 1.5 total. This is surprisingly important for the random kills they can garner on high impact units like healers or cannons.

The castle, redoubts, and towers are primarily anti air. As such, the castle should be somewhat centralized, with towers protecting mortars and cannon towers. These will be the primary focus of IA attackers utilizing aircraft and should centralized and defended accordingly. Redoubts are also anti air, but have interesting interactions when combined with garrisons and enemy archer units. Essentially, if placed in front of a garrison you can often get archers to prioritize attacking the defending units *behind the redoubt, therefore bringing them in range to get chewed up.

Mortar and cannon towers are just basic damage upgrades, however they're such important structures that you can't afford to leave them be. Nothing fancy on this one, it's just a matter of bigger is better. Spread them out but keep mortars in range to protect eachother.

Traps are less important to upgrade than in prior ages, you won't be 1 shotting any cavalry units with them. Instead know that well placed and spread out caltrops will slow the bajeesus out of an army, and can turn relatively weak defensive points in to absolute killzones, particularly against heavy cavalry that get ahead of a main army, or a primary attack force in range of multiple mortars.

The last 2 tips go together, and regard your high hp buildings, namely mills, markets, the refinery, storehouse, and vault. You should only be guarding at most 5 of the 9 buildings, focus on gold *or* food depending on what you are upgrading next, and oil once your essential offensive upgrades are completed. Guarding the storehouse is completely optional and base layout dependant. Regardless, these are among the highest hp buildings you own, so place them to act as a buffer for defenders to spawn, mortars to fire etc.

Utilize these as best as possible and you should see a noticeable difference in your defenses :)

Edited: typo's.

suffer on defense? probably agree. but on offense is a major improvement from the gunpowder age. as for myself, i entered enlightenment age as soon as my level alowed to do so. i got attacked about 1-2 times in a week. leaving about 1-2 mln resources before loging out most of the times. and for me, gunpowder is an age to skip as fast as possible. i did not even bothered to upgrade my army first. did it with EA training blessing in a few weeks. game us easy on enlightenment age. plenty of gunpowder or EA bases to attack with medieval defenses.
