Iron Age isn't worth trying to fret over base design. If anything, one should focus on walling off defenses and markets/storage. Take out most of your buildings from the walls and triangulate your defenses. It just isn't worth it to create essentially an open core, given classical players and most iron age can simply break through a gate and be free roam to zerg your base

I tended to level up everything before moving age, but some people think that's too slow. Early on a push to Medieval is a good idea because of the library and Catapults etc. Helps a lot in defending.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Break your base into sections. protect your resources. What Koa said - but DO fret over it. Making little tweaks keeps you interested, and helps you learn about the game. Don't be scared to TOTALLY re-do it if it doesn't work out either. Enjoy.

I tend to want to upgrade everything before moving up Ages as well. But that's just me I've updated my base to protect my resources as advised. Check it out and lemme know what you think. I really do appreciate the feedback Thank you for all your help!

A couple of reason why I don't have a base that protects my resources. At least in the British classical age. 1. I don't get attacked that often. 2. I can spread my resources out, protect my defenses and they are dead before they get too far. I've lost less than 5k gold in the last 24 hours and less than 20k of food. I'm getting to the point where I need 100k plus to build anything so I might change up a little but for now my people stay busy enough. Also, if I'm looking for a base to attack and all your defenses are exposed but your resources are behind walls I'm going to drop my guys in and take out your defenses and clean up your resources with what time I have left.
