Is it impossible to defend in this game?

Have Japanese in the iron age and upgraded the base to max everything.
Then a classical age opponent comes with a much stronger army and rolls through my defenses like a hot knife through butter.

Only defensive improvement possible is to remove the farms and make double walls around the catapult.
Even then, I think it's just delaying the inevitable.

Why is the game so imbalanced?
With matchmaking done by medals alone, what's stopping way stronger opponents from raiding you?
It makes it impossible to farm and hold your resources.

Is this game all about raiding?
Why even bother building defenses? Just make 1 arrow tower and be done with it.
Why bother with farms and caravans and defenses? You can't keep anything you make anyway.
Pour all resources into barracks and blacksmith and just raid to get everything you want.
Is this how the game is supposed to be played?

he fact that you have your farms behind walls if the first place says it all really. You've got a lot to learn. Try looking at the tactics and strategies. There are some good base layouts there. Also don't be surprised if higher age players roll over you that is always gonna happen until you get to end game.

There is a tipping point, when all your stuff get's upgraded to a "more scary" level, and people start skipping over you. Or silly people who don't know any better attack you and you wipe them. So, at that point you only occasionally get fully wiped out.

Last time I got nuked was early last week. Since then noone has 5 starred me as it's not worth their losses.

Keep at it, and you'll get to that balance level also. (but you'll still get wiped out sometimes)

I also agree with Whatwhat - concentrate on design now, you will learn a lot.

Yes, this game is all about raiding. It's a Clash of Clans like raiding game with some elements in city building. It is not a city building game inherently. You are supposed to raid and get raided.

It is not as imbalanced as you think. After you get raided, you get a peace treaty which stops people attacking you in a certain time. Then you log-in and raid others - for multiple times. After you learn how to get loot, it is very easy to get much more loot from others than the resources you lose.

Also, Iron age is quite early in this game. Once you reach higher age, your defense will become more and more effective. You also get more mills and markets to distribute you eggs into multiple baskets.

However, this game does need some mechanism to stop people staying in low medal range and torturing new players. One way is to give penalty on loot when people attack lower age bases. Another is to offer some real reward for higher rank, like daily crowns (even just a few) so that people in late game will be willing to climb higher.

You can guarantee they won't give away daily crowns. They probably rely on the higher level players spending a lot of real money, so they would not want to reduce that any from a cashflow perspective.

Even going 1 below, 1 above would be better than 2 & 2. And it would take pressure off the Classical and Medieval guys straight away.

dont focus on iron age, get to classical as soon as possible. cut down forests instead of upgrading buildings until you get there.

Well, I redesigned my base and moved my farms out, double-walled the catapult, protected only the arrow towers, garrisons, catapult, mills and markets.
Even made the fortification blessing statue.
It did help a bit but classical age army with 8x fancy horses and some kind of super-bowman I've never seen still slice through my lvl 3 walls easily.
I think I need ballista to counter those horsemen.

So.... I'm just going to upgrade to classical age and see if I can defend better.
Also timing my raids to do it all at once... Thanks for your tips. Still learning.....

I do a decent job defending and I seem to go for hours before someone attacks me. But anyone with higher upgrades is gonna roll me some, that's expected

Defense is not worth spending that much time. Improving your looting skills will benefit you most. For now, are you using mercenary and alliance troops when attacking? If not, those can be a big boost for you.

So I've managed to uprade to classical and built up my defenses.
Also put walls just around the markets, mills and defensive buildings.
Then I lowered medals to 250.
Now not getting anymore attacks and able to rely on production.

Am supplementing it with pinpoint raids that target only opponents mills and markets to get max loot/min medals.
Strategy has been working pretty well so far, at least for early classical.
Thank you for all your help.

Aside from the bugs, this game is so far... somewhat playable.....

The math is simple: Attack others more than you get attacked and spend the loot to the maximum before closing the app, so your losses will be insignificant on the long run.

Empty coffers ward off attacks as much as badass defenses.
