I think we should be able to still train Mercs when upgrading.

and if you smash all defensive buildings, they should come back with your troops! having to buy them every attack is not right.

I could be wrong but it seems different troop types take up different spaces in your camp but I can't see anywhere that it says the amount of spaces it takes up?

Im pretty sure if you click on the question mark when wanting to recruit mercs and scroll down it should gives you the spec the army size aka amount of space it takes up
