Has anybody done much testing with mortar troops at this point? My experience has been lackluster with them at best, but with new research giving them +20% stats as well as an extra range that could change. They are also in the first tier of the university making them more readily available to upgrade than Howitzers in the third tier.

They are outstanding at war attacks with Mongols coalition which gives them faster attack speed, and are great for defense as donated troops

That was my take as well Coldest. I'm only in EA but if they're viable at GA then I may stay put a little while prior to advancing so I don't run in to as much of a worker bottleneck later.

I have 4 of them in multiplayer atacks too.
They seem to work good on bases with Acropolis , Colosseum , and Angkor Wat combo thanks to their splash damage .
Shooters don't struggle so much with selfhealing fast spawning troops

Training times are something to consider, but if they're less prone to defenders than the cannon line is with similar damage then there is something to be said for them.

I'll try today after work army comp of 30 shooters , 3 healers, 3 cavalries and rest of mortar units and see how it goes.

Beeing british means that even if cavalries die I'll have mortar protection

Honestly, maybe it's me, but mortars changed the entire game for me. Until mortars, I needed to sabotage everything, or get overrun with troops. Mortars have an advantage that cannons and even Calvary simply lack when it comes to attacking, their AI seems more attuned to the surrounding area.

I haven't seen mortars stop directly next to a hole, and try to widen the hole. Mortars don't walk past troops because they are targeted already, they respond more quickly to threats, and I've seen then actually stop an attack on a building because line of Fire Dragons/Muskets/Fire Lancers/Aquibusters, was getting overran.

Was gonna write something among the lines after seeing the results of an mortar based army yesterday.

They really are awesome in bigger group .
Just protect them with archers and 3 planes and you don't have to worry about anything.

Prolly if 3 planes are used right you don't even need archers .

Will test army comp of cavalry, healing carts and mortars only.

Only downfall of mortar based army is retraining time if you lose many of them in battle

Yeah I only really use a mortar heavy force during war. The time it takes is very consuming.

I had done this by accident, I had built all bombards, mortars, and Fire Lancers, I was donating to our bases during war. I forgot what I was doing and simply bitty retrain. So later, when I went to do a regular attack, I was cringing because I had 5 mortars, 4 bombards, a healing cart, and like 19 Fire Lancers. I wiped wiped out the enlightenment base that was easily10 levels higher than me at the time.

Grant you the base actually allowed me to use it's own walls against it and my mortars destroyed everything before troops ever got to them, but five of them plus the 2 I had donated to me, wad like watching fire works, they destroyed building before the bombards even lined up to shoot.

I'm running 3 mtr and 3 art instead of just 5 art. Seems to be working fine. I use 4 grunts, 20 rifle, 5 tank, 3 trucks, 3 arty and 3 mtrs.

This is an intriguing thread. I may bring mortars back into my line up and play around a bit. Never been a fan of HC anyway..

I've been playing around with them as I'm sick of the healer, cannon, archer, hc army. Unfortunately at the EA I haven't had a lot of luck with them yet. This is with 4 levels of damage and 1 of hp from the university. I'll play around a bit more and update though.

I've compared their stats with 6 riflemen and 6 riflemen compared to 1 mortar troop have more hp & dps & longer range - I'm not convinced yet to use mortar troops.

Problem is you don't compute splash damage here

In the latest patch in global library there is 5 tech increase +20% attack, +20% hitpoint of mortar and +1 range. So the question is with those 5 tech boost, is mortar better than howitzer yet?
