Mortars more of an option now?

With the added range, does them Mortar line become a viable troop? I wasn't even going to research those so that's why I thought I would throw this question out here.

Speaking as someone who tried multiple troop combos with, in my previous SP campaigns, l can tell you to stick with archers and arties. When my army was mortar heavy it performed better but their shorter-than-archer range still gets them dead. As single or squad sized units they dont bring any advantage to your fight. Plus, they didnt seem to kill defenders as quickly as riflemen.

The only time they performed well was when l had 12 of them - but that's 72 troop spaces!!! 72 riflemen do more damage. From what I've seen the bazookas pack more punch & would be a greater addition to an army - and only take up 4 spaces.

Mortars - nice graphics - but a paper tiger, at least at the basic level. Hope this helps.

Yes, I didn't think this update was big enough to make them useful. Thank you

As far as I can tell the added range is only for the Gunpowder Age basic Mortar and the EA Guard Mortar. The IA Trench Mortar and Global Field Mortar already had range 4 and that doesn't seem to have changed. So I'm not seeing anything here that will tempt people away from Artillery and Howitzers.

I'm having a hard time figuring out what troops to use for attacks as it is. I don't need to worry about something that takes up a lot of space. I think I will go through a big learning curve going against good EA bases once I get my TC finished. I don't think I will get as many 5 star attacks at first.

If you're about to enter EA just remember it will be hard at first. 2 of my nations have been IA and Global for a while so I've been spoilt but I've just upgraded to IA on another nation. I forgot how tough it can be in those first few weeks/months!

Mortars are a troop that still puzzles me. I see no use, no benefit from them. I used them in my army for some time, and while they were okey, they didn't last long, and I still seem to get equal or better results replacing them with regular gunmen. I don't think they're properly polished yet. While defensive mortars are plain awesome. Game-changing, even.

Mortars are useless. I tried for almost 2 weeks to make them work. Unless rifles have their ability to shoot over walls removed, there is no point to the mortar.

On a related note, why on earth are mortars MORE expensive than artillery? It makes absolutely no sense...
