university research not multi-task?

I thought I can assign 6 workers to research two leaders' tree at the same time. Then this morning I notice that they are not working at the same time but one after another!
That means I have wasted three workers for so many days because i always assign 6 workers for two leaders. Is it a bug or my illusion? Do not tell me that is the game design intention, too evil to believe...
