"Volksgrenadier": closer the mark than "Wehrmacht" but still no cigar

I get that the veneer of historicity covering this game is pretty thin and that, yes, it's just a game. But history is sort of my thing, so I still have to get this off my chest. If gratuitous historical inaccuracies don't bug you, feel free to move on to another thread.

I will give BHG this much credit: at least this time around, they have managed to find a name that's not laughably anachronistic. (The Industrial Age is meant to be roughly the WWI period. The IA German UU is called the "Wehrmacht". But "Wehrmacht" was a term used to refer to the German army only during the Nazi period.)

Unique units are supposed to be elite versions of their type, better than the garden-variety kind other nations have. The special Global Age German assault infantry are called "Volksgrenadier". But here's the thing. While the Germans did indeed field Volksgrenadier units during WWII, they were anything but the best the German army had to offer. Volksgrenadier units were created late in the war, when combat losses from years of fighting created a crippling manpower shortage for the Wehrmacht. They included many men who would have been turned away from military service earlier in the war: teenagers, old men, people who required a special diet (e.g. the 416 VG division, known as the Schlagsahne ["whipped cream"] division), etc. Volksgrenadier units generally received little in the way of training or equipment. Despite all of this, some fought tenaciously, but Volksgrenadiers were a last-ditch expedient, not a handpicked elite.

The same argument could be made for the Ashigaru soldier the Japanese have. Ashigaru were the untrained peasant cannon fodder (and actually mostly used in the Gunpower era). So this isn't the first time they have been off somewhat with their "history"

Let's not even get into the whole thing with French and Greeks having better tanks because 1,000-2,000 years prior they fielded formidable cavalry...lol

While we're getting our historical geek on, here's another thing that bugs me about the Global Age update: they got the ground troops mixed up. The blurb for the new Assault Infantry is all about the M-1 Garand rifle. (Also, whatever they're holding in the unit graphic, it's not a Garand. Maybe a Boys anti-tank rifle?) Meanwhile, Riflemen upgrade to Submachine Gunners. SMGs are short-range weapons most useful for the kind of close-in fighting done by . . . assault troops.

I laughed pretty hard when I saw "submachine gun" troops that are able to outrange almost every other unit in the game (and shoot over walls lol). Its pretty dumb.

Look at descriptions for the Global Age heavy tank and fighter plane. They are off. They mention a Tiger II tank but its actually a Tiger I tank. Same for fighter plane mention Me 262 but it looks more like a Hawker Hurricane or Bf 109.

Well I was going to agree about the SMG being a close quarters weapon (told you @Martine) and the fact that I think the Infantry are holding Bren guns or possibly BAR's but I don't want to look like a nerd ....... :p ped2000

Yes they really messed up in this game with troops even enlightenment age musketeers were good against cav and skirmishers were the ones good against infantry just a name change is all that is needed. Many of the civilizations had different tanks... also as they keep going each civ needs to start looking g different from eachother.... the global age cav killers have machine guns which would be good against other infantry and the riflemen need m1 grands in global age...
