What's the real benefit of an alliance?

So I joined an alliance and I got 3 bowmen. Battle once and troops are done.
Is that all there is to an alliance - donating/receiving troops once in a while?
What's the big deal?
Chat is nothing special.

Are there unique missions or rewards for being in an alliance?
What am I missing?

Not as of now but I'm sure there will be stuff added in upcoming upgrades. I use it mostly for chatting and exchanging battle ideas and strategies. Never ask for troops personally because I don't have the need (I'm in classical). However, I'm sure when I get further into the ages, ally troops will be very useful. *Alliance- Warsong*

Alliance troops are very useful.

If you are in low age (such as classical) and some late game player gives you several top-level units, those units are SUPER strong against other low age players.

If you are in higher level, why turning down 9 or 12 extra units.

Besides troops, there isn't very much for now.

Why is it that some alliances have requirements like "must be active" must have x number of medals, etc?
Are they vying for the alliance leaderboards?
Do you get special rewards for being high on the leaderboards?

I have a good alliance. Were all grateful dead fans so we chat it up. Wars will be coming but that is a future update right now its all about extra troops for raiding

I think leader boards are determined by medal count.. I hope that is not how they determine leaders It shoudl be more then medal count

The alliance troops is based on donations among players, so usually alliance require some activeness. You can't donate any troops when you are not even active.

In terms of medals, most of them just want to make sure their members at least have some experience and knowledge in this game. Only a few are targeting leaderboards.

Leaderboard doesn't have actual reward for now except daily league reward, but I guess there eventually will be.
