When to Advance Age

As it stands, one of if not the first thing that I check at the start of any age -- Dawn included -- is how much gold it's going to take to advance me to the next one. I prioritize increasing my maximum gold capacity to accommodate and then the ability to generate that output in no more than a week's worth of play. (I have yet to purchase any Crowns, though I use them to rush when available.) At the same time, I know that as I advance through the ages it takes hours and then days to finish the upgrades to the Town Center in order to complete the Age advancement, taking time and resources away from my citizens constructing more of quantity X. That is why I don't always advance as soon as I can, but again work to ensure that I am able to advance as soon as possible.

I always check the next level cost when I upgrade (Classical now) but I also work on upgrading everything to it's maximum level BEFORE I go up to the next age. Also, while I'm upgradng the age, I loot like a crazy man to fill up the storehouses so when I hit the bottom of the next age I can start upgrading the necessities.
I have bought one lot of gold so far, and it helped a lot, especially early on. You have to spend a lot more as you go, so things slow down unless you are prepared to spend more on crowns. The special offer they had with the "gold + extra house" was probably the best value so far, would be good to see more like that?
