i chose Greek as my nation. I've tried various combinations of armies but none are working too well. Anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried going Companion heavy? I don't know what age you are in, but going in with 2 or 3 companions is useless. If you are early stage Classical or Iron Age, go in with 7-10 bows and the rest Companions. You won't run into very many stables which is why you need phalanx, hoplite or whatever it is you have at your age. The bows are there to support your Companions. While the Comps take down defensive buildings, the bows take down defensive troops.

As you advance, you'll need to work in Hoplite, phalanx etc, but I recommend keeping the figure low. I am presently at advanced medieval, and I use 10 comps 13 bows and 7 phalanx. Very effectice

In medieval age I m using 4 companions, 1 wall miner and the rest pikemen and archers at a ratio of 3:2. Usually I lose less than 10 pikemen, I will try some combinations with ballistas soon

most players who sound like they know what their talking about and the times ive seen proof of concept the armies are balanced. 4-6 cav. 10-15 bows, 1-2 cannons, 1-2 supply carts 20-40 infantry, 1 wall miner all depending on what unique units u have, what age ur in and what uve blacksmith researched. what medal range ur farming. whether ur farming resources or medals. and ur tactical preferances. tactics tend to be freeze or dynamite for catapults
