In 1808, the Portuguese royal family and government fled to the colony of Brazil in response to Napoleon’s invasion of Portugal. Prince Pedro grew up in Brazil and ended up staying behind after his father King Joao VI finally agreed to return to Europe in 1821, years after the danger had passed. Growing tensions led to a successful war of independence against Portugal, resulting in Pedro being crowned the first emperor of Brazil in 1822.
