Canceling newly started research bug

When canceling a freshly-started research at the blacksmith, a popup comes up and says that you will be refunded the FULL amount. This is nice as if you selected something by mistake you can quickly fix it. After a period of time (a few minutes?) the message changes and says you will only get half back.

Well, I did this on an expensive general upgrade. The message said I'd get all back, so I clicked ok, but the game only gave back half my oil. The game cheated out of 20k oil. It clearly told me I'd get everything back, but then only gave half back. I'm very mad.

yes, this happens if you're not quick on the cancel. you only have 60 seconds to hit that button, but if you get the pop-up at 55 seconds, then confirm it at 63 seconds, you'll only get half back.

well I consider it a bug that the game doesn't change the popup window or give you an error if you confirm it after the minute mark. There is no way for me to know if the thing I'm confirming will actually be honored or not.

it's happened to me more than once, and it definitely sucks, but nowadays i just make sure i really want the upgrade before i start it.
