A day and night cycle would make the game far more realistic, and fun. You could have shadows, and sensets. Also attacking at night would be slightly different. The enemy towers will have a harder time seeing you, and thus do not start attacking until your troops are close to it. Unfortunately, your own troops may become received as well. They may shoot your own troops, or not shoot the enemy for fear of killing a teammate. This would put much variety into attacking, and be more realistic.

Your cities light up. Fire works launch. Your citizens fall asleep for the night, and will wake up rested, and refreshed, ready for a long day of hard work that they like so much. Your guards on top of towers, put on their special night-vision goggles. The moon casts tiny shadows, and reflects on the surface of the water. The woods fill with sounds of crickets chirping, and owls hooting. Your world is alive, even at night.

That sounds like a really interesting idea but combat wise seems really difficult but even just doing it for cosmetic effects sounds like a great idea
