Hello! I recently hit Enlightenment Age and have been upgrading my units and buildings etc. Everything of mine was max level before I moved into Enlightenment and I have done quite a bit of University research. Obviously, bases tend to be tougher now and I was hoping you could all share some thoughts on what army compositions/Tactics you found useful at this age for attacking and raiding? I am currently playing Japanese, but plan to change when it's cheaper, so I welcome specific-Japanese advice as well as what you found useful for other civs. Thank you in advance for the help!

Pick French as a nation. I tell everyone GPD+ to pick French

For World War you should have 2 Sabotage, 5 Elephants/Horsemen in Mercenary Camp, max alliance gate. Work your Generals too. I'd say your set up for World War shosho be: 5 Cannons, 2 Healers, 5-6 Horsemen and the rest shooters and some infantry.

Raiding is much easier: 4 miners, 4-5 shooters for distraction and the rest Raiders, and use Protect if there's A LOT to loot.

Hope that helps.

Germans: 3-4 horses, the rest footmen. Quick raids with footmen that net you rss or quick 'full' attacks that net you all rss and trade goods. Footmen are cheap and quick to retrain.
British: good long term option, extra loot and extra archer range plus damage.
Or what Lord S said. :D

Great tanks, bad nation perks. If only Nexon/BHG updated nation's perks, Greeks would've been a top nation.

I'm British enlightenment age, and i have had a lot of success with 5 heavy calvary, 4 mortars, 4 cannons, 2 supply carts, 21 shooters. For war tactics i use 1 sabotage, 1 betrayal, and 1 demolition. The goal is to stay behind the calvary here and it shouldn't be a problem. I try not to use war tactics, generals, or mercenaries during regular raiding, but if i do i try to limit the use to only 1 betrayal or sabotage if it will make a major difference in the outcome of the battle, and generals at the end to help with the 5 star. I use a ladder scheme in my multiplayer target selection, work up to about 1000-1200 medals with regular army, then go down to 400-600 trophies with 2 wall breakers and 39 raiders, then repeat. I get most of my oil on the down swing with the raiders, since i've found it easier to take oil from industrial players using raiders than my regular army. I hope this helps.

How do you find the mortars vs the cannons?
In my experience the mortar fire doesn't have the range or the speed of fire. Almost always l find the mortar shells are falling on an empty patch which has already been destroyed by the cannon.

A few things set mortars apart from cannons for me, and are the reason I still use them. First, they are cheaper and faster to train. Second, they attack enemies which cannons do not. And finally, they add splash damage. Mortar splash damage is excellent for taking out large groups of defenders and easily dispatch tanks that my shooters struggle with. I do agree that the lag from their fire sometimes makes their attacks wasted, but overall I think they are an effective addition to any army.

im going to be really happy when I can upgrade their range from 4 to 5.

I'm British too (CWA) but I don't use tanks because my healers were always rushing to heal them. Now with extra archers, or sometimes APCs, l don't have any trouble defending my artillery plus my healers stay with the main group, everyone compliments everyone else.
Mortars are unnecessary & slowin my combo.
Glad you're enjoying them.:)

With mortar troops it depends on the goal. For low-cost raids I use tanks, heavy infantry, shooters, raiders, and planes. For all-purpose multiplayer attacks I add artillery, supply vehicles, a wall breacher, a General, and two mortars (this is in Industrial age, but Enlightenment age was the same). Mortars are an essential troop in that mix. The results are better with them than without them.

Here are some highlights of why I say "mortars rock!" and encourage everyone to give them a try.
