Farms and Caravans

I know I am new here and I am sure this topic has been brought up many times before but farms and caravans are completely useless to upgrade past enlightenment age. Farms seem cheaper than the rest of the buildings which is fine but the amount of reward you get for upgrading it simply isn't worth it. To upgrade my level 13 farm to level 14 I will have to wait 351 days before the small boost in production I get breaks even, with the upgrade cost and the food lost while the farm is upgrading. Why would I want to put any resources into upgrading a farm that I will have to wait almost a year for my efforts to pay off. The only value I can see in upgrading farms and caravans is aesthetics since those level 18 greenhouse farms look very nice. Either the cost of the farm and the time to build needs to be reduced or the upgrades should actually have a noticeable effect on production that will pay off in some time less than 100 days. If I were to choose I think it should be the latter. Right now I am in the global age with mostly enlightenment age farms and caravans and the five good emperors event gave me the feeling of how good this improvement would feel. I don't expect the five good emperor's event effects to be on permanently (it was far too generous enough as it is) but I think that the resource production I was experiencing over the summer should be accessible if I choose to upgrade all my farms and caravans to max level atomic age. Fully maxed atomic age production buildings should be equivalent to enlightenment age production buildings under the 200% effect of the event (or even 120/160%, I will take anything at this point).

Yeah this is an ongoing issue that has been discussed many times. I see many atomic bases with medieval-level farms and caravans. I think the only way to encourage people to upgrade these is to cap the upgrade time (at 1 or 2 days perhaps) and just increase the resources required to upgrade. But 7 or 8 days to upgrade a farm? No thanks.

Even if upgrades to farms were instant, it would still take 292 days for a level 14 farm upgrade to pay itself off. Either a combination of time reduction and resource reduction has to happen or the rewards for upgrading the farm should be significantly increased.

Good point. I used to upgrade economics early when advancing at lower ages. They don't even make my list of upgrade priorities at Atomic level.

So what you're saying is that you want to upgrade your farms and that will be your principle source of food? You're never ever going to be raiding other bases on a daily basis?
Talking about your farms paying itself off is stupid, this is a raiding game! If everyone thought like you there would be very little resources to raid, for anyone.

I don't want it to be my principal source of food but I want it to be something that is actually having some sort of noticeable effect for what I am paying.

You realize that the more that farms produce, the more you can raid right? By buffing farms there will be a lot more food stored up in those idle bases you are raiding so it is a win win situation. Increases raiding loot and increases your own farms production.

Only worth you can get out of them is them waste a shot or two while defending and crowns you get for upgrading them in early phase

I won't upgrade them simply because I don't want to waste my worker's time on them. If they were instant like walls maybe I would throw some rss at them after I got my walls. But as is, those little workers of mine have enough on their Honey-do list 😊 Time is money you know.

Yeah, same with me too.. upgrading farms and caravan are worthless.. at least boost the production or time reductions are worth..
TinSoldier , what do you say about this?

Yes it doesn't take long for you to realise that it's a waste of time upgrading both farms and caravans once you get to enlightenment, even before to be honest. They really need to make upgrading the farms and caravans worth it for higher level players.

nucleo yes I do, if you've seen my other posts. I'm always the one arguing that people should upgrade their farms, at least to IA.
Good that we're on the same page. :)

I posted a suggestion a while back on how to encourage player's to upgrade farms and caravans. I think you need to have a multi-pronged approach; decrease cost/workers/time to upgrade, make increase in production larger for each upgrade, increase hit points for each upgrade, put farms and caravans on sale frequently.

It does seem like this is one of the biggest topics (aside from instant-time upgrades) that came out of the Summer for the Ages. I'll point the devs to these threads and see if I can get them to weigh in.

When we are in the global age, upgrade farms and caravans need 4 workers and each of them only increase production 200points.. what a shame lol..
