Heavy tanks vs regular tanks for British IA

What are everyone’s thoughts and experiences on which type of tank is the most effective for wars and multiplayer. I’m currently playing as British in the late IA and using 3 or 4 regular tanks. Is it worth upgrading the factory to use 2 heavys instead?

Heavy tanks are a completely different function than regular tanks. They are like a howitzer and tank all in one, minus the shooting over walls. They usually work best with all or mostly heavy tank attacks, rather than mixed in with other troop types. The biggest upside is that if you use them carefully, you can raid continuously without losing anything.

It is certainly worth upgrading the factory, you will want it very much in atomic no matter what (APCs and THs). But it is less a question of incorporating them in your mix, then whether you want to do or try that type of raiding. Make sure you have decent airplanes and the splash damage research in the library before trying them, they will be a lot less effective without splash damage and air support.

3 APCs is the best. The infantry has higher damage and can survive the high explosive mine!

if you try Ht, then one HT is enough to go with main army. (you need to take care of silo by other means)

I know. You don't have APC in IA. but save the time of uprading tanks and rush to higher age

To answer the OPs question, either is fine because they're only distractions, but HT is better. Being British your army should have shooters and artillery doing the main damage anyway.
The advantage of a HT is that it stays with the rest of your army, which is good if you use healers.
Regular tanks go after defenses and end up killed or healers follow them and they end up getting killed.

Noob question : how do you avoid missile silo shooting at your whole army when HT stays close to her ? Atm I use regular tanks but they end up killed fast or either the healers get killed.

Deploy your HTs first and away from your regular army. The problem is the healers will still go after them so maybe keep your healers until the silo is destroyed, then regroup the army & deploy healers?

I'd say regular tanks are way better, but not for the British. I'm Greek and found a lot of advantages for Greek Heavy Cavalry over Heavy Tanks. Each Greek Heavy Cavalry unit has more hitpoints than a Heavy Tank, while it only takes 3-4 of them to match a Heavy Tank attack. Their preference to defense buildings is very good (think of a Heavy Tank within the range of Anti-Tank but closest to other buildings). You can train much more of them, replenish them a lot easier when killed and they are a lot more faster!!!

But again... I'm speaking of the Greek Tanks. I suppose the same applies to the French. For the British (or other nation), this might not work that well as Heavy Cavalry is destroyed much easier and has weaker attack.

I think it may depend on your style of play. I fight British nation and I like to sweep around bases and let my long range +5 infantry take out everything they can reach before going in for the kill. I like to keep my army tight and rally a lot and the heavy tanks stay with my troops. The regular tanks just take off for the closest defense building and usually get killed by anti tank defense.

However if your style of play is more direct head-on the regular tanks may be a better option.

When I went Global the first thing I upgraded was to the medium tanks which are much better than the light tanks but still take off leaving my army stranded so I went back to my MK2 tanks until I got my MK3. I’m really, really liking the MK3 heavy tanks :)

Heavy tanks are fantastic for MP raiding, but they are pretty useless until you hit MK5/MK6 and do the uni research. I can raid all day without losing a single troop. I also use them in war attacks if we are facing an easy opponent.

Heavy tanks are just awesome especially when you research all of the library, that said you have to be able to bring it back or it gets expensive really quickly. I stopped using and upgrading after mk4 they cost 1600 oil each to retrain I usually carry 2-4 into the battle. Ouch!

I agree with Beer Man. HT's are well worth the heavy investment by the time you get to Atomic/CWA. They're too slow, dumb and take up too much valuable troop space before that though. Their lack of a defined target combined with their costs makes them too much of a liability before then. Good walls, barbed wire, landmines, atg's backed up by anti-air prey upon their slow speed and terrible AI. Without sturdy planes to support them they spend way too much time slowly turning around and backing up to go after individual defenders or silly things like farms.
