You need an alliance to help you with these things. Build your alliance gate then check out the alliance gate section of the forum and find an alliance you would like to join.
To answer your questions here...
Save your crowns until later in the game. You will have lots of opportunities to win them thru achievements and old man goals.
Work on upgrading your walls and gates. Put them around your town center (tc), defensive buildings and storage buildings though a series of cells. The more walls the attacker has to go thru to get to your tc the better.
Be sure to attach as many buildings as possible with roads to your tc. This will increase the tc hp and also earn more gold.

I'm also new guy, but I can give you some opinions.
As for normal battle, we normally put the TC outside and secure the food and gold. As for world war, we will need to secure the TC in order to reduce the star got by your opponent.
Crown, mostly are for late game I guess, you can retrain your troops with crown, so that you can launch plenty of attacks in a short time. Crown is a must to change your nation, it cost 600, so you might want to save it, if you are plan to change your 1st choice nation.
