How does level 2 of the Command Technology work?

One of the new technologies from the Global Age library is Command. Level 2 Command upgrades your general's defensive retinue. My library is upgrading right now, so I can't see what it says, but when I looked ahead from IA it said it would upgrade them to heavy gatling guns. At that point I already had a level 3 Factory and Machine Guns researched. My fort was also level 4 (IA), which doesn't seem like it would correlate with heavy gatling guns either. So I can't figure out what determines the type of retinue defenders you'd get from that tech. Anybody know?

I've never been sure what the Generals Retinue were, you would think it was some kind of defender escorting the General around, but I don't recall seeing anybody else pop out of a fort. Maybe it's the shooty guys on top.

As an aside - anybody know the costs of GA Library stuff? Mine upgrades in a couple of eons and would like to get something going to get the Old Man to go away with his pestering.

The retinue basically means that foot soldiers spawn whenever a general spawns from the castle/fort. Which is why it's a good idea to always have a general on defense. Otherwise you won't get a retinue spawn. I think it's a bit bugged though, sometimes it produces the footsies of your age and sometimes it produces ones that are lower than your age. Anyways the upgrade basically turns those footsies into gatling gunners.

Watch the fort closely, 6-8 infantry will come out when the general does
