How does the museum forest cost expansion refund work?

Sorry to be so technical, but if I have a bit of pottery that offers a substantial refund for forest expansions. To get the refund, do I (1) have to exhibit it before starting work on the expansion.....easy (2) exhibit it when the expansion is ready.....not too hard (3) exhibit it throughout the expansion period....forget it! I guess the same goes for the library refunds.

Put it up when your forest expansion is ready. That would be Option 2

all the pottery options seem to work the same way. even ‘oil from oil wells’ buffs your collection not your production
