Strongest Nation

When I got to Iron Age I picked the Romans, because I had read a number of older web discussions that were written around the time the nations were originally created, and Romans were clearly the best at that time. Based on the composition of the top 100 players, it looks like the French are now in the lead, followed by the British, Koreans and Romans. I'll probably make a switch at the point I'm allowed to do so in Medieval, so can anyone make a case for one nation being the strongest?

Anyone? I like the sound of the British, I think they'd fit my play style better than the French. But the French look like they are objectively more powerful. Any thoughts? I'm not to Medieval yet, but will likely get there by the end of the week.

France will be quite underwhelming until you're Enlightenment Age with Training Blessing. Unless you'd rather save crowns for something else, Britain/Korea will be much stronger until you have it.

As far as a "Britain vs. Korea" debate goes, most swear by the British Unique Unit, others prefer the Korean. A near maxed Industrial Age player in my alliance has tried both and it is of his opinion the Black Watch is better as the +1 Range provides much more survivability. However, the extra War Academy tactic of the Koreans, he says, can be very useful for 5-starring maxed/cheating players in World Wars.

Both the Black Watch and Righteous Rifleman are "God-tier" Unique Units right now, it's really a matter of personal preference.

You may also want to consider Germany, they got a rather significant buff in the last update that went largely unnoticed. An additional 5% (15% total) damage may not seem like much, but when you add that up for each individual Barracks, Factory and Mercenary unit (it's still not clear whether Air Units also receive the buff, they show the icon above them when deployed but CS claims that they don't), it ends up being quite powerful. Longer and faster rallies is not something to be overlooked either. Whether Germany is as strong as your other options is yet to be determined, due to the lack of end-game German players, but something to consider nontheless.

In sofar as the appeal of the French relies greatly on their ability to rebuild your army more quickly (and thus raid more often, and make more loot), my main concern with them is that your ability to build troops will far outstrip your ability to build tactics, and so most of the time you will be attacking without tactics, or at least limited to using 1 per battle. Or are tactics including in the French build-time benefits?

I was curious about the Germans. An additional 15% damage seems like it should make them 15% more powerful all around, and when the game was first released the 10% more powerful Romans were far and away the best nation. In addition, I use rally as often as it comes up, so seeing it come up twice as often would be extremely helpful. However I don't see much German representation in the top 100 players. My guess is that the unique units of the French, British and Koreans are the reason they dominate the top 100. I am leaning towards the British now, but I still have a bit to go before I reach medieval yet. I forgot that I have to upgrade my gold storage to even have the capacity to reach Medieval, and then it'll be a few days after I start before the upgrade finishes and I'll likely want to get the next Residence building before I do that.

Leaderboards are 3/4 French. I thought I was special picking them. Should've stayed German.

Just my opinion, but I think switching nations is a waste of time. OF course for those of us who can afford to fork out a lot of crowns to do so its a non-issue , but once a nation becomes too powerful, everyone one will complain it will get nerfed and another nation will take its place, thus creating an endless cycle. Perhaps its what the developers intended in order to generate more revenue. Dont get me wrong though. It is a nice feature, but it has its downside as well as its benefits. As for me, I'll stick with the Chinese. Who knows....my time may come eventually.

Matt, you can jump on the popular bandwagon or you can research and pick a nation that suits your style.ie: dont be a sheep cos its popular - make YOUR choice.

It's not about popularity, it's about strength. As for style, I think the French or British would fit best, which are currently the two most popular nations. I've only found a few games where my play style diverged enough from the consensus to make a strategy that wasn't the strongest in general the strongest for me.

How about giving British and Romans a second UA? Maybe that would generate some competition....

I think for crown users, Koreans are the best. For the others, the French.

IMO the best nations are either France or Greece simply because they have the best (unique) heavy units. Greece is also good financially (5% rebate) and has a useful ability to finish up upgrades/research early (not much, but even 40 mins means something when you need to do something else than play the game).

But France has the fastest build time of units, which coupled with the training blessing could churn out troops at super speed, making raiding and the building up of one's gold/food/oil balances a much easier process.

So for me only these two are worth contemplating. Germany does sound interesting though with the damage bonus after every winning battle. As well as more (and longer) rallies during battles which can help with battle strategy.

I ended up going with the British. The deciding factor is that I think the British UU will have better longevity. Also with so many French players near the top of the leader board it seems most likely they'll get a nerf if any nation does. Attacking from long range also suits my play style better than relying on heavy units. Once I see artillery in action I'll know for certain, but based on the composition of most high level armies it looks like artillery/ranged infantry will be the way to go.
